2014 Hair Goals/Plans

--> I know some will see it as being too early but I don't want to wait for another 4 weeks before I start working towards my new year's goals. After all, there's no break in the hair journey.  Am currently evaluating my regimen which hasn't been strict at all. However, there's going to be a massive change.
  1. The first thing I'll be diligent with is herbal rinses with EVERY wash including co-washing.
  2.  I'll  balance my protein based products with moisture ones. If I use protein deep conditioner, the leave will be moisture based. If I use moisturizing deep conditioner, leave in will be protein.

2013 Goals In Review!

-->
This is a long post; get a mug of juice and enjoy!! A look at the regimen goals
  • Protective style with my own hair. I have to learn how to cornrow this year. Seriously! I can do a cornrow now though not neatly.
  •   Pre-poo before every wash whether overnight or with hooded dryer. When I get the dryer, I’ll pre-poo with it and do the overnight deep conditioning. Kept up with the pre-poo
  • Roller set or flexi rod instead of air drying more. I get very smooth hair when I roller set so I’ll stick to that when I purchase the hooded dryer. Failed! Didn’t do rollersets even with the hooded dryer I bought.
  •    Satin scarf EVERY night. I do use the satin scarf but not diligently so I’ll do my best to be consistent with it. Failed!
  •  Either deep condition twice a week or co-wash and deep condition once a week. Since I plan on continuing with the Dark n Lovely instant deep conditioners. I may use that as a co-wash and do a full wash once a week. What I mean is that you can leave it on for just 2 minutes as a normal conditioner or leave it on for 7 minutes for deep conditioning. Kept up with this successfully

The Ghanaian Woman and Weight loss

--> It’s been a misconception that fat people are often the rich ones! Each time I put on weight, some friends tend to give me compliments like “ you are looking fine, good” your husband is taking good care of you. Well, my husband doesn’t see being fat as a sign of healthy living nor do I (no offense here).  If I loose weight, then am either sick or stressed! READ MORE

L.O.C or L.C.O Method for Moisturizing Hair

The Liquid, Oil, Cream or the Liquid, Cream, Oil techniques have become quite popular among fellow hair bloggers as well as readers. The two methods all aim at keeping moisture locked in the hair.
Image result for loc method
Liquid: any water based leave in
Cream: moisturizing creams
Oils: what you use for sealing in the leave in and moisturizer.
Whereas the L.O.C stands for Liquid, Oil and Cream, the L. C. O represents Liquid, Cream and Oil. Basically, after you apply the liquid, you can either use a cream and seal with oil or use oil and seal with cream.
Check out my video showing how I do this method.

The L.C.O is considered an offspring of the L.O.C because it was only when some ladies realised that cream before oil works better for them.
Personally, I haven't consciously tried both techniques but intend to dedicate two months to experiment with them.

Because our weather tends to be dry most often, finding a method that helps the hair retain more moisture is an excellent idea. At the end of my tests, which I will start in 3 weeks time,I'll share my results with you.
Have you tried any of these two? What were your results?

How God Answered My Hair Prayer

If you believe in God, then you know he cares for us, especially women! (wink)

I'd never cared for how my hair looked until my husband noticed an attitude I'd cultivated with regard to the hair. I stopped combing, getting a wash, clipping etc. In fact, others at home had seen it but I cared less about my hair because I'd become fed up with it! Totally fed up!!! Somehow, my sweetheart told me plainly that my hair didn't look good at all! Then, a few days later, I asked God to make my hair beautiful because I hated the current state. I used to pray for long hair after I cut off everything in 2004 and within 2 years, my hair had become what I considered long! So when  I got a prompting about using my internet since I had obtained all my research info from Google, I reached for a modem and googled how to care for relaxed hair. That gave birth to my own healthy hair

Not all men would do that for fear of how the lady would react. I think I'll do a full post on my husband and his relationship with my hair!

I appreciate the wisdom God gave me at that moment and I know He still cares about my hair. Therefore, I've  started praying about the hair again- that it will thrive and flourish.

Wash Day: Soft Hair Awakened!

--> Amen. Initially, I'd decided to co-wash  as the Ghana-Egypt match was on going. Am not a football enthusiast but at least I was eavesdropping. I used a mix of the VO5 conditioner and Suave Almond sheabutter (review coming tomorrow) and followed with motions moisture plus conditioner, covered with plastic cap for about 10 minutes. I, actually, don't feel any "plus" with the motions-full review will be up soon.

Wash Day In 4 Steps: Amazing Results!

--> Simplicity is now my tag line lol.1. Went to my stylist, Rose for the wash. She clarified/chelated with ORS aloe shampoo twice
2. Deep conditioned with Keracare humecto for 15 minutes
3. Applied Hawaiian Silky leave in conditioner. Rollerset and sat under hooded dryer.
4. Applied ORS oil moisturizing lotion

I've also stocked up on Keracare humecto (see my review here) and will getting more soon! If my next washes  give me the same result, then, the hawaiian silky leave in conditioner stays!! That will end my search for a moisturizing leave in. I've been swinging my hair like no one's business!!!

Bought A New Leave In But...

it contains hydrolyzed wheat protein!!!! After watching several reviews and reading reviews on blogs about Keracare leave in, the one word that most people used was "moisturizing". So I went out to get it, walked out of the shop and decided to verify if indeed it was protein free- I was stunned, shocked, surprised and perplexed to find  the protein content again but refused to cry.

And The Light Shone...

in my life!

There's one thing I've learnt from Nadege of relaxedhairhealth-don't wait for months to start working towards your goals-start as soon as you set them. So, am not waiting for the year to end before I implement my hair goals; am commencing them now! I've said I'm not buying anything hair related in 2014 except restocking stables and I'v started that now. With my current arsenal, I don't think I'll have any warfare with my hair, battles, yes. These two years have seen me grow from necklength to almost APL and back to necklength and it isn't funny when you loose interest in caring for your hair. Though my goals aren't up for you, I'm putting them into action. Who knows? I might achieve some of them before the year begins!

And The Light Shone...

on my hair.

I'm gradually falling in love with my hair again but I'll cut a lot more of the hennaed ends off in my next touch up and continue cutting till all is off! 2014 won't be a year of hair experiment; it will be that of clothing experiments, footwear, Jewellery (not for work), hair accessories, make up and skin care. Most of these items won't be work related because my work ethics prohibit them but for special occasions and off work days, I'll show you what I have. Am channeling my investments into building a beautiful wardrobe for work and that is my main goal.

If I get to change jobs, that will be a plus as I wouldn't have to worry about getting new clothings. I don't get comfortable, I push myself all the time till I reach my goals. I believe I've reached my hair goals not in terms of length but knowing that my hair is such a minimalist. If you don't get to see a lot of hair reviews, don't be disappointed, I might do some bits and pieces of outfit of the day. Exciting, right? My hair goals for 2014 will be up on the 30th of November so I have December to completely prepare for the new year!

Yea, that's the light that is shinning.

Am Doing Too Much! Salt In Conditioner Method Fail!

--> I did another co-wash yesterday (see this week's co-washing here) . Yesterday, by chance, I came up a post that talked about cholesterols in general also containing protein; I thought it was only the Dark and lovely ultra cholesterol. Because I didn't any protein overload, I tried the salt in conditioner method. I tried the salt in conditioner method to reduce any increased protein I might have had with the use of the ORS replenishing conditioner and Kuza cholesterol.Well, the salt in conditioner didn't work!

Wash Day: Tried Conditioner Pre Shampoo Treatment

More like an accidental conditioner prepoo. Anyway, here's how it all went down starting from 10:30pm
  1. Apparently, I'd left all my shampoos at home; the brohaha of living at two places (see my post on this here)! I'd intended doing a  treatments with products I was sent to test so I wanted to shampoo. Fortunately, I hadn't used it the sample shampoo - I see it on the table everyday and assume it's a also a detangler. I'd used the detangler once assumed it was the detangler lying around- found the detangler lying beneath the shampoo lol.

My Hair After Relaxer

--> Now it's the time to go into the details of my relaxer update. See my July relaxer update here. My observations concerning this relaxer:
  • Not using a comb to smooth the relaxer through the hair was one of the BEST decisions I've made so far. Though I hadn't tried a no lye relaxer before, I still ventured to try what had been on my mind. I'm quite pleased the texture I had so I'll keep getting my relaxers that way.
  • The front of my hair processed faster than the back though the stylist started at the back. For the next one, I'll get her to smoothen the back more.
  • My hair feels dry at the roots and I believe it's because I need to chelate to get rid of the calcium deposit from the no lye

Biotin Challenge-Registration

-->

The challenge begins on December 1, 2013 and ends on March 1, 2013

What is biotin? Also known as vitamin B7, it is a member of the water soluble vitamin B group. Supporting the growth of healthy hair, biotin has a direct role in the creation of keratin, a protein that is present in hair and nails of our bodies. Known for its hair friendliness, it is also called vitamin H, and is often prescribed as a treatment for healing dry scalps, treating brittle fingernails and for re-activating hair growth in people experiencing hair loss. (source:www.ehow.com) Read more here.

I've used biotin based supplements for a month and noticed a great deal of growth and thickness! I do believe that biotin can also help your hair to achieve its maximum potential. The challenge will be over a 3 month period; you may or not reach your ultimate goal in 3 months but you'll be encouraged by the results to reach your goals.

Challenge Goals

The challenge begins on December 1, 2013 and ends of March 1, 2014. By the end of the goal, it's my hope that you'll achieve not just have  increase in growth but in thickness too.

Mira's Hair : My First Fold Up!!!

--> Since the start of my hhj I have always just couldn't wait for the day when I could hold up my hair. A ponytail. For an actual pony tail I am going to have to wait almost 2 years. But recently I realised I am able to hold all of my hair up. And although it's not a pony, it's a milestone, a sign that my pony is possible.

When You Live At Two Places!

--> On several occasions, I've had to deal with living at two different locations due to studies. Due to this, I struggled with keeping products at both places because those were the days I couldn't afford having two of each item.
To cope with my up and down movement, I rather got small bottles and divided the product into two parts! Since I spent more time in school more that at home, the quantity for home was less.
Then, with rollers and other tools, I left them at home just to save me the temptation of trying fancy styles or blow drying and rather air dried. Salon visits were rare!

The quality of water also impacts the state of the hair. I believe that our hair adjusts to the kind of water we use. To ensure that I didn't experience set backs from the frequent change, I clarified regularly.
Now, I find myself in that situation; not as a student though so I can afford to have different products at both places with the exception of a few tools. I'll leave my steamer, blow dryer and Tripod at my second place and make use of my stylist at home for any deep conditioning treatment. Did I tell you her services are pretty inexpensive?

The annoying thing is I have to plan  very well in order to ensure that the situation doesn't turn me into a junkie. A bit here and there can be deceptive in terms of numbers!

Do you hustle between places? How do you cope?

Last Relaxer Of 2013! After 16 Weeks Stretch

--> I can't believe I'm writing a last relaxer update post for this year when just a short while ago, I wrote one for 2012 -see here! See my July relaxer update here
Anyways, I use Elasta QP no lye relaxer for sensitive scalp. The whole application and smoothing process took about 20 minutes. NO combing through!  She used neutralizing shampoo and intense moisture treatment that came in the pack. She neutralized 6 times!! Can you imagine? It was such an awesome feeling.

For leave in, she used the cantu sheabutter- see review here and followed with Doo Gro oil and another nice smelling oil- I couldn't see the package. She roller set and let me say that her roller set skills are the boom!! I'll use a chelating shampoo when I wash my hair.

Is Biotin Working For Me?

I posted my biotin based products a month ago and even though I didn't take before pictures, I hoped to notice a difference in the length!First of all, I had 2 biotin based products; Nature's Way Hair, Skin and Nails and Nature's Way biotin. The former contains 3000mcg biotin whilst the latter has 5000 mcg biotin.

The Hair Skin and Nails is 3x a day but smells awful! Within a week, I stopped taking it and stuck to the pure biotin which is 1x a day. This is taken with food too.
Image result for Nature's Way Hair, Skin and NailsAlright, to the effect. When I cut off that much length about 6 weeks ago, I could put my hair into a tiny ponytail with some major fly aways. I started the biotin  2 weeks after the cut, then I got twists for another  2 weeks. So for a month now, I've been taking it almost everyday. After I took down the twists, I didn't feel excited because I couldn't notice any increase in length! However, as soon as I started detangling, I saw that the hair was becoming a huge afro lol yet, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get a decent ponytail with only a month of biotin. Wrong!!!!
My ponytail fitted into my clip with a little fly away at the nape and sides of the ear. Yea, I'd  to gain more than 1 inch of growth in order to get such a full ponytail again which is exactly what biotin did! Am able to roll and tuck again without hairs sticking out, it's now easy to put up the hair.
Simply put, BIOTIN IS WORKING!!! I might do a biotin challenge for 2014!

Guest Post: What Is Your Transitioning Power?

-->
By Maame.
So transitioning is not easy. All those people who make it seem so, it’s only because they’ve got magic, believe me. And the magic doesn’t make transitioning easy, mind you! It’s just to make others think it is. When I decided to transition, I didn’t really believe it was hard. I mean I acknowledged on a baser level but I didn’t think it would be so hard! Geez! The tangles! Those monsters! I have been tempted on so many occasions to snip at those ends (and I have snipped at a few spots here and there, lol). But I haven’t and I PERSEVERE for the following reasons;
One, I need those ends. After purposing in my heart to pay as little visits to the salon as possible, I needed some hair to practice my styling. I’m partial to flat twists and up do’s (I discovered) so in the 9 months I've been transitioning, I’ve practiced a lot. And I’m getting good! It’s exciting for me so yay! Lol!!!

October in Review; November Plans

--> It's the final lap of year 2013! The year has gone quite fast or it's just my thinking?lolAnyways, October was eventful for the most part. Let me break down October in review and November plans for you.
*My two hair tools arrived; Secura hair and facial steamer and Conair blow dryer! I have used the dryer on my sister's hair as well as my friend's and the results were amazzzzzing! Will use it on my hair soon! I'll be trying the Secura facial this weekend and possibly dc with the hair steamer.
*Bought 2 bottles of ORS replenishing conditioner plus one creme of nature detangling shampoo-all 32oz. Will keep one in each home.
* Am shipping products from amazon and I have kanechom chocolate moisturizing treatment; decided to get 2 conditioners from Aussie. I have replaced the other deep conditioners with sublimed sulphur!
*Decided to use the dark and lovely cholesterol for co-washing and it works best that way for me now. Won't purchase Herbal Essences as a result.
*Got hemp and almond  oils too! I've added them to my spray bottle mix and burdock oil too!Have jbco too so am through with oils for now:)
* Tried exercising but the rains are still incessant at dawn; will go back to a different routine this month
* My research papers are on hold as I've had a lot of work load. It won't be any different this month but I've increased my reading time to cover more this month.
* I was consistent with my multi vitamins; almost daily. Now, let me say that it was worth it! Look out for a post on my current hair length and how the vitamins helped with growth! Will continue the consistency this month; already added one of the vitamins to my amazon cart.
* I no longer have hooded dryer so no flexi rods nor perm rods; I got twists for the rest of October. Don't know what I'll do for this month but the new stylist's techniques worked well; will follow those techniques for my braids.
* For this month, no co-washing; at least till I find a suitable technique to combat extreme shrinkage.
* Buy more hair accessories; need them for elegant styles.
Nothing really for November; simply enjoy my tools and products.
How are your goals coming?
