Lessons From Game Of Thrones Season 1 [part 1]

If you've not heard of Game of Thrones, here's a gist.
There are seven kingdoms with each serving for power. Each one has its own tricks and tactics for dealing with the other. At the end of it all, it's about who gets to sit on the ultimate throne. I guess that's what life is all about, right? Not really.

In season one, we are introduced to the key players. From Robert Baratheon, King of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, his wife Cersei Lannister who is the secret lover of her twin Jamie Lannister, and the killer of the previous king, and also has 3 kids with Cersei.

The previous ruling house's king Targaryen had Daenerys and Viserys as his kids who had  to  go into  exile to avoid being killed.

The king, Robert Baratheon apparently came to power by getting rid of the then king, with the help of Jaime Lannister who was the king's hand. Jamie's role in the killing of King    was supposedly to prevent the '' Mad King ''  from destroying Kings Landing, the seat of power.

At the end of the season,  we discover several things about each character. So,  to make this series interesting, I'll share a few lessons today and take it from there.

Lesson 1

Have Allies : Each character in the drama has an ally. Whether for good or evil,  it was these allies that contributed to the success or failure of the characters. However,  the lesson from the allies is that it's better to have both open and hidden allies in life. The hidden ones can always come to your aid without notice. The open ones would also support you but within some limits.
Lesson 2

Listen to Instructions. Cersei and Jamie were caught in the sex act by Bran,  the son of Ned Stark, who was Robert's friend. Stark was the warden of the kingdom of Winerfell. Jamie attempted to kill Bran for fear of being reported but that failed. This event however was a catalyst for several other mistakes on the part of Bran's mom,  Lady Catelyn. Her husband cautioned her against reacting to the incident but did she listen? No!

If she had obeyed the husband,  she would have eventually found out the culprit and saved her life too.

Each decision we make,  has repercussions on the lives of others whether we know it or not.

Had Jamie and Cersei not done the deed at Winterfell, Bran wouldn't have been paralysed to make his mom act too.

The action of each character impacted the others. Let's learn from this.
Lesson 3

Be ready for anything at all in life! Ned Stark manages to find out the truth about Jamie's affair but that also cost his life. Lesson? Be wise in your dealings and trust no one!

Lesson 5

Make hay whilst the sun shines! Littlefinger and Varys act as '' watchers'' of the other characters noting their weaknesses and strengths. These men used every opportunity to establish a foothold and that kept that alive!

We shall continue in the season 2.

Do you watch Game of Thrones? What are your thoughts about it?

3 Ways To Disinfect Undies

As I promised in my birthday post,  I'm getting  more personal and today,  I'm sharing three ways to disinfect your pants; kill bacteria and yeast.

image

** First,  I have a large collection of pants so I can go a month without a wash. Yes,  I'm obsessed with pants and I'm not yet done with buying them. Even 100 won't suffice Lol. It's easy to disinfect pants in bulk than individual pants. I also prefer bulk washing to individual washing so I don't need to hang them in the bathroom.
**Use very hot water to soak your undies and add your detergent. That removes stains and odours too. I've actually boiled my pants for 30 minutes! You can get an old saucepan for that. This works best if you are prone to yeast infections.
**An easy method is to use antibacterial like Carmel or dettol. These are very potent in killing bacteria. Sometimes,  I use both hot water and the Carmel.
**Sun dry and Iron aka use heat. When I can,  I iron my pants after sun drying. Double killer there!

Be sure to discard old undies regularly too. Purge those granny undies too.

Salon Co Wash

I guess not having to do my own hair is not bad at all and when it comes to salon co wash, I'm sure that's another indication of how lazy I've become with my hair. Since I haven't bought the foam wrap lotion, I went back to the "top"   salon for a wash this time. Even if I get the wrap,  I'm not sure I will stop going there. I want the hair to be long enough before I deal with it myself again. I'll just make sure they  do all the steps I want.

Anyway,  I took the Sheamoisture Superfruit conditioner and kinky curly knot today leave in conditioner. The stylist who did the hair last week was the same one who took care of the hair this wash. This time though, I made them eliminate the setting lotion and used only the wrap lotion to see how the hair would turn out. This was a risky decision considering that I had an event to attend and time wasn't also on my side to correct mistakes.
I say under the hooded dryer for about 30 minutes.
The salon is Agartha Kay, right at High Way junction,  Ashaley Botwe Road.

This salon co wash went pretty well and I guess it's fun to enjoy being treated like a royal sometimes.

Don't mind the face Lol.
I'd definitely be going there as often as I can until my hair is long enough. I've also found ORS styling mouse which I'll pick during the week either that or some other two which I'll read on soon.

Irish Spring Gear Body Wash Review

Irish Spring Gear body wash came into my bathing routine a couple of weeks ago. When I decided to ditch bar soaps, the next thing was to find a shower gel that won't leave my skin feeling soapy. Also, I needed one that would leave me smelling fresh. A friend came around with the Irish Spring Gear body wash and convinced me to give it a try.

Here's what I think of it.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="400"]Irish spring Gear Body Wash Irish spring Gear Body Wash[/caption]

Price :35gh ( I later saw that it sells for less in some shops and also  got to see more body washes from this brand)
What it claims :
Irish Spring Gear is a line if shower products engineered for advanced performance. The body wash retains more of the skin's natural hydration than ordinary bar of soap and provides 24 hour freshness.
3-in-1 Body+Face+Hair Wash which has Pro Vitamin B5 and Eucalyptus extract for "all-over" body, hair and face clean.
How I use it:
I flip the top and pour a small amount on my sponge. I do my best to shower twice a day so I use it with every wash.
My Likes
I like that it's easy to pour from the press nozzle because this gel lathers so well you don't need a lot.

I also like the mild sweet fragrance and that adds to the fresh smelling scent I have when leaving the  bathroom.

The best of all is that it doesn't leave your skin slippery! I mean this is the first fear I had about shower gels and most of the ones I'd tried left my skin feeling as if I used rain water go shower.
I shower twice a day so I most definitely can say this gel doesn't  leave your skin dry too.
As a matter of fact,  the Irish Spring Gear is an amazing shower gel.

Next on the list is the Naya Naturals shower gel.

Natural Hair Inspiration : Diana

Diana cut off her waist length relaxed hair after transitioning for 6 months to natural hair. She's our natural hair inspiration living in Ghana.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="670"]Twist with natural hair Twist with natural hiar[/caption]

Diana has been on a healthy hair journey for a while now. When we first met, she had waist length relaxed hair. When she decided to go natural, we all hoped she would do a long term transition. We got the bombshell that she had big chopped at 6 months post relaxer! That was about 3 years ago.

She has developed a very simple routine to cater for the needs of the hair. In addition, she's an avid protective styler. Wigs are key in her protective styling routine.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Midback natural hair Midback natural hair[/caption]

I also know Diana has a basic wash routine which saves her time, makes detangling easy for her as well as minimizing knots and tangles which can lead to loss of length.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="560"]Midback natural hair Midback natural hair[/caption]

Diana is very diligent with maintaining a minimal hair routine and that has been one of the ways she's been able to retain length, grow her hair from ear length to midback length within these past few years.

what do you think of today's natural hair inspiration?

Best Salon Wash So Far This Year

I'd set out to purchased a foam wrap lotion to use instead of struggling with air-dried crazy relaxed hair.

When I got to the salon,  they had run out of the foam wrap but somehow, I was already determined to try that salon so I requested for a wash.

image

image

image

image

She used Keracare foam wrap lotion and here are the results of the  roller set.
She used a local product (forgot to check the name but will go back again so will have it for you).
I love the results! The downside is... the price. I paid 3x what I pay at my nearby salon but that's understandable considering the use of foam wrap, leave in and quality shampoo and conditioner.
I'll go back on Saturday for another wash for our end of year programme.

No Wash In A Week But...

I haven't touched my leave out in a week nor washed it but it's still soft and moisturized.

image

Why? I'm attributing it to the Jamaican Black Castor Oil I apply to the hair line daily. In addition to this,  the weather has been  cold thus the  hair isn't losing moisture.

The damp atmosphere automatically moisturizes my hair and makes styling  easy.
I may wash it during the week and deep condition it.
The crotchet braid will come off in three weeks time for a full wash. I'm hoping the three weeks will give me the break I need to attend to some serious business.

Night Baths?

Let me laugh at this one because night baths were off topics until I met hubby Lol. When you are single,  you do what you want with your bed, after marriage,  the bed story changes.

This post is targeted at the non night bathers.  I know there are occasions the weather is too cold to bath or when you are sick and cold. However,  under normal circumstances,  taking night showers have a lot of benefits. I was surprised when one married friend said she doesn't night baths. 😈😈😈😈

After watching hygiene videos,  I gained more insight into this habit.  Aside feeling  fresh, here are five more reasons to shower before bedtime.

image

** You are ever ready for action with your husband. You don't wait till the bell rings or announcement goes out before you rush  to bath. You can kill the mood. Hehehehehe.
**You get a good night sleep with refreshed body. When I don't bath before bed,  I struggle with heat and sticky  body.
**Your facial routine is also better. You are forced to remove your pan cakes aka make up and treat your face well.
** Add tooth brushing to your night routine and you have a healthy set of teeth and fresh breathe.
**Enjoy a relaxing bath if you have a tub. If there's one thing I wish I had, it's a tub so I could run baths. It's a great way to treat yourself. Because I can't do tubs,  I've devised a new method which I'll share with you soon. You'll still enjoy the use of oils and fragrance in your bathing routine.

Do You Heat Your Conditioner?

The heating of conditioner is something I learnt from a hair blogger where you heat only the deep conditioner you'll be using to make it  warm for application.
image

This heating isn't new to me; I used to  do it with queen helene cholesterol using warm water as directed. This time,  you rather put the conditioner in the warm water. After trying this with  the Cantu sheabutter for natural hair Deep Treatment Masque,  I just had to find a way to incorporate it in my regimen daily.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="680" caption="Sheamoisture products available in the shop"]image[/caption]

In addition  to speeding up the absorption of the deep conditioner,   I found that the deep conditioner had extra slip because of the added oils which were also heated in the process.

These two benefits of heating deep conditioners  before application can save you time and money as well as make your wash days easier.

3 Subtle Causes Of Hair Breakage

When we talk about hair breakage,  one of the things we do is to stay away from combs and heating tools. However,  there are subtle causes of hair breakage that need to be addressed.

image

The first is your nails. When your nails are broken, it can snag your hair casting breakage. Little snags here and there will in due time become visible damage. Trim or file the ends of your nails before washing your hair.

The second subtle cause of hair breakage is your moisturizing and seeing technique. Most often,  moisturizing and sealing in sections is key to preventing breakage. However,  care needs to be taken when sectioning the hair,  either with combs or fingers as the process itself can cause breakage. If you run your ends vigorously in the name of getting the hair to absorb products, you are creating room for broken ends.

The last one is how you sleep. If you toss and turn like me,  then,  take measures to ensure your hair is in a satin cap,  loosely twisted or bunned. When you cover with the cap,  the hair underneath can still move around and that can be a huge source of concern regarding breakage.

How do you prevent hair breakage?

Wash Day With Sheamoisture Superfruit

When you are 5 weeks post relaxer and your hair turns out great after wash, you can definitely appreciate the products that made it possible and in my case,  it's the Sheamoisture Products.

First,  I'd wanted to pick up the Sheamoisture Superfruit 10-in-1 renewal system but my girl picked up the conditioner instead of shampoo. I can't blame her because both have the same look. What turned out to  be a mistake, it's a blessing!

When I took the Superfruit, I thought it was a shampoo till I read the package. However,  I couldn't do anything about it so
I shampooed once with diluted Sheamoisture African black soap shampoo.
This was the moment of truth; I've not tried any Sheamoisture conditioner before so I was quite worried about a wrong outcome. I took the plunge and applied the conditioner. Aside smiling,  I was just like '' oh'' and '' wow''. The conditioner worked wonders. It's very thick,  has slip and not strong scented. I was sold! I combed through the hair whilst the conditioner was in it -  I haven't done this in 4 years due to the breakage I get when I do it. The comb simply glided through the hair.

I left it on for about 5 minutes,  dried hair a bit and touched my hair. I don't remember my hair feeling extremely soft and smooth in ages!

image

My fear of Sheamoisture conditioners was due to the not so good reviews I'd seen. Now, though,  I can't wait to try other conditioners. In fact,  I'll purchase more when I can because I Co wash mid week and being a sulfate free conditioner,  I won't have issues with it.

I applied kinky curly knot today leave in and chi silk infusion and allowed to airdry for some minutes before blow drying.

image

Will this be a weekly thing? It could be. I really like the results and to be able to blow dry on cool when I co wash is also ok with me until I can do wet buns. I'm reluctant to do co washes mid week due to puffy hair the next morning.

How as your wash day?

How To Choose Tampons

Since I've talked about the different types of tampons,  let's look at the absorption capacity.

I use the lil-let tampons and they  come in regular,  super, super plus and ultra plus.
See more here.
Choosing one or more depends on the flow. For light or normal flow,  lite to regular can be used. It's indicated on the package so don't worry.

For medium to heavy flow,  super or super plus can be used.

It's advised to change the tampons as indicated on the package. Don't leave it beyond the recommended time if you want to prevent leaks. You can  change  every 3 hours like I do just to be safe.

The first two days are usually heavy so a heavy absorbing tampon is ok. As the flow tappers off,  you have to switch to regular ones.

Also,  you can use a panty liner to catch leaks. However,  be sure not sleep with the liner or leave it for long periods. You can also switch to sanitary pads when at home. I do that for days 4-5.

Let me know if you need further explanations. I'm equally new to this.

Afraid Of Tampons?

image

If there is a hygiene product that a lot of Ghanaian ladies are afraid of or aren't aware of,  it is the tampon.

What is a tampon? For me,  I describe it as a piece of absorbing material wrapped and shaped like an inhaler,  that you insert to absorb the flow.
There are two types of tampons; applicator and digital.

image

The applicator tampon is inserted using an applicator like a yeast infection vaginal cream. I think when Ghanaian women think of tampons,  they see an applicator type.

When I began reading on the tampons,  I realized I couldn't do with an applicator because it seems the digital was straight forward to use and I was right.

The digital tampon (first picture) simply requires removing the wrapper and inserting it as if you are pushing it back towards the anal region. The thing about tampon is that if you don't insert it well,  it's uncomfortable.

Another thing to note is that tampons come in different sizes -  the one I use is about 6 different sizes, from regular to ultra plus or so. I use regular and super depending on the flow.

It takes a while to adjust to tampons because we are accustomed to it but once you get a hang of it,  you'll like it.

The danger most ladies talk about from tampons stems from leaving it in for long hours. The Toxic Shock Syndrome is due to some ladies forgetting that something is there and going days without taking it out. Yes,  it's very comfortable so you may forget but please don't.

This is the bit about tampons so let's look at pros and cons.

It's convenient to use because you don't need to  pad up your pants. Using a panty liner will catch leaks which will happen if you don't change on time just like pads.

You can literally wear what you want because there is nothing drawing a line,  no fear of stains and no bulkiness.

Tampons are easy to remove; the thread you leave out when inserting is go help you pull it out. Some ladies fear the thread will tear but I think that depends on the brand and the force you use. You don't need to force it,  a gentle tug gets it moving out.

Tampons aren't easily available. I purchase mine from supermarkets or drugstores and the least is 10gh for 16 pieces with the brand I use. Of course,  you may use that quantity for about two or more months.

Easy to carry about. That's the one thing I love about tampons. I can change as often as possible without having to plan on how to do it unlike pads. You can put about even 8 pieces in your secret underwear pocket.

Easy to dispose off without raising suspicions in the bin Lol.

Lastly,  I don't leak nor stain pants unless I don't change  on time. The panty liner catches those accidental leaks on time.
So,  there you have it. Tampons or pads?

Scentless Hair Products

Ever since I fell ill,  my sense of smell has been  heightened, something I can't seem to understand. Usually, I'd apply a mild scented product just for the hair to smell good but lately,  fee absence of any scent is most welcomed.

image

An example is the ors hairepair moisture cream that I still can't stand. I mean I used to think being pregnant back then was the reason for the dislike for the smell but now,  I'm definitely not pregnant. My nose just doesn't like the  scent though it's not unpleasant.

When I pass my hands through the hair,  I'm glad I don't smell anything afterwards. I'm not sure if the sickness has anything to do with this change; I most certainly wouldn't want this to be permanent as I love my hair to smell good.

Even my favourite cantu sheabutter lotion seems to put me off.
I'll just ensure this and hope it's a temporal change.

Tampons Or Pads?

Growing up as a girl in Ghana,  the only thing I knew was Sanitary  pads.

Pads have been part of us for ages and if one were to pop in the backyard shop,  you can easily pick up a pad. However,  tampons are a different story.

After suffering from leaks for all these years,  I decided to take the plunge and try tampons! My verdict? Where have these been all these years? I mean pads are cool but tampons, for me are awesome! Let's look at the pros and Cons of both.

Pads:
Depending on your flow,  a minimum of two packs are enough. Yazz and Forever Easy come with 12 pieces of 6 large and 6 small for heavy and light flows. For me, I could use 3 packs!

Pads are easily accessible. You can get one anywhere,  anytime which makes it more convenient.

Leaking is a huge headache with pads and worse for me is having to sit down. The number of checks we do when we get stand up is hilarious sometimes. You may need to change pants more often as a result of leaks which means more washing. I never enjoy that.

You get to measure and see your flow with pads. It's easy to know if your flow is normal or not. Pads are easy to remove and replace and so I say more hygienic in this regard.

With pads,  you are more alert about your flow so you won't forget to change. After delivery, Sanitary pads are definitely the way to go for comfort down there.

Lastly,  travelling in pads is a huge headache,  at least for me. Each vacation,I always prayed that I got to go home when the flow is over else I wait.

I'll talk about tampons in the next post.
Which one do you use?
