Length Retention Without Protective Styling

Image
Is it possible to grow long and healthy hair without protective styling ? The answer lies in the definition of protective styles. A lot of times, we overlook certain basic styles as just mere hair styles without being aware of their value as protective style.  A lot of ladies wear turbans and scarfs and these are actually protecting your hair. Have you wondered why our Muslim sisters seem to rwtian so much length? Now you know. In addition, the buns you wear daily is an easy form of protective style that's also effective. It may seems like it's a simpler and quick style but you are doing your hair a huge favour too.  Do you wear wigs and therefore cornrow your hair for that? You are protective styling without being conscious of it. Once there is no to little manipulation, your hair will thrive. Lastly, do you wear your hair  in twists? Do you wear twist outs? These styles require less manipulation thereby can help with length retention.

Have You Traveled? Hair Care Tips For A New Environment

Image
This post is relevant for those who have lived in this part of the world and are relocating or have relocated to colder climates.  First, before traveling, get a long term protective style like weave on or braids. These can last for about 3 months as you settle in.  Two. Don't worry about brands when you get there. There is a misconception that Caucasian products especially, hair products won't work for our hair  type and that's not true. Hair is hair, especially with relaxed hair. Because they have straight hair for the most part, you'll do much good if you focus on the products and what they can offer. For example, I've noticed that a lot the brands focus on damaged hair and repairing it hence you'll be able to enjoy the benefits of these products, especially if you have relaxed hair. Since some tend to straighten their hair often, a lot of oils and leave in products are available at your disposal because chemically treated hair and flat ironed hair have a lo

What Happened This Week?Relaxer Update!

Image
Let’s say this is the first official relaxer for 2023!  The ORS olive lye relaxer was used and because my hair is still short, I did the process on my own. However, that will change because my hair has gained a lot of length so the next touch up will be at the salon. After application, I left it to sit for about 10 minutes to process and then rinsed off under the shower using warm water. Then, I applied mega growth neutralizing shampoo three times to ensure everything was out of the hair. With each wash, I left the shampoo to process for about 2 minutes before washing out.  Next, I  used up the last bit of Olaplex No. 0 and left it for 10 minutes. I shampooed again with John Frieda detox shampoo because of the Olaplex.  Lastly, I used the John Frieda detox  conditioner. After rinsing it out, I was too exhausted so I saturated the hair with Olaplex oil and went to bed with a bonnet over the hair. This was the best decision because I woke up with hydrated hair. The next wash will be for

Petroleum Jelly For Your Hair

Image
Petroleum jelly was a huge no no a few years ago but there has been a recent  surge in its use for sealing in moisture. Petroleum jelly (also called petrolatum) is  a mixture of mineral oils and waxes, which form a semisolid jelly-like substance . There are various uses of petroleum jelly when it comes to hair care. 1] Can be used in twisting your hair along with your hair gel.  2] Use as a sealant after moisturizer and light oil. This is especially important during the dry season. 3)To prevent your hair during the relaxer application  How do you use your Vaseline jelly?

Should You Wash Your Own Hair?

Image
Washing hair can be an arduous task at the salon so if you choose to wash at home, you have to be mentally and physically prepared for the stress. The question though is whether it’s necessary in this part of the world. When you begin your hair journey, you definitely want to have a good wash routine to ensure your hair becomes healthy again. When you get your own products, it speeds up the repair process and helps you to also understand your hair needs.  In the western world, salon visits are costly hence the rise in ladies doing their own wash. That’s the genesis of the YouTube wash videos. Washing one’s own hair also guides to you choose quality products as well as determine the best practices for your hair. In addition, you are able to compare brands and techniques too.  However, for us here,  most of our salons are quite affordable to wash at least once a month or twice a month.   In view of this, the advice I give for newbies on a hair journey is to continue using the salon. They

How To Transition From Damaged To Healthy Hair (Part Three)

Image
When you’ve done your hair treatment for about 6 months, you can now evaluate each part of your routine. 1] Does your shampoo leave your hair dry or moisturizer? If dry, you may have to find a moisture one. 2] Does weekly conditioning or monthly conditioning work for you?  ] How often do clarify your hair ? 5] Have you seen improvement in thickness and length?  6] Has your hair rejected any products or techniques? Have you found the cause? 7] What ingredients work for your hair? Why do they work well? Can you use that to guide you choose other products? These will strengthen and reverse some of the damage. Bonus: start off with taking multivit

Postpartum Hair Loss Supplements

Postpartum hair loss is definitely one you can’t control and shouldn’t risk your baby’s life in pursuit of healthy hair. However, there are supplements to help you. 1. Pregnacare breastfeeding  2.  Pregnacare new mum 3. New Chapter postnatal  4. Mega food baby &Me postnatal multi  5.   Personally, I have noticed that the lactating tea, Mother’s milk, has bitter fennel fruit, fenugreek seed, blessed thistle herb and a host of herbs that also impact the hair! My observation so far is my hair is still thicker and more hydrated, possibly from the herbs. I also have Milk easy lactating powder which contains moringa powder. I’m through with my iron supplement for now so I’m glad these herbs will keep me going.  In case you are going through postpartum hair loss, know that it’s normal and it eventually stops.
