HAS YOUR HAIR STOPPED GROWING?

Has your hair really stopped growing? Well if your answer was a resounding YES, let me disappoint you. Hair actually never ‘stops’ growing. The problem is that, you're losing hair (through shedding / breaking ) at the same rate that your hair grows. What you’re experiencing is known in the hair world as a hair growth plateau . A growth plateau is when, due to breakage /shedding, your hair doesn’t retain length as it grows out, giving the impression that your hair isn’t growing. If you believe you’ve hit a growth plateau, here are some tips to increase length retention. TRIM No I don’t hate you. Most likely, you’re shedding more than you originally should. This could be as a result of split ends that have travelled up your hair shaft. It could also be because your hair is knotted at the ends and thus, when you detangle/comb, innocent hairs follow the shed ones. A trim basically is saying ‘let’s start afresh’, where you’ll have fuller, knot & split free ends. This can do wonders

How To Avoid Spilt Ends

Length retention isn't as easy as it seems and spilt ends even make it harder! The key to spilt ends is trimming off dead ends as early as possible! Regular trims translates into getting rid of old hair that may have the splits. Early trimming prevents the split from getting further down towards the root.  In addition, you need to keep your ends off your shoulders if you are at that length. Friction from the rub can damage the ends! Lastly, start treating your hair right even when it's short. That minimizes damage as the hair gets longer and that would mean being able to hold on to the ends for a bit longer rather than having to cut off the hair all the time. 4 Ways To Moisturise Your Hair

There are several options available for moisturizing and sealing your hair. You'll need to try them and find what works for you.  Method 1:Using your leave in conditioner (Especially if it is creamy or lotion). Apply to the hair and follow with an oil. Do this daily if you have to in order to keep the moisture in the hair.  Method 2: Using a hair moisturizer. If you are using Ors hairepair, S curl no drip moisturizer or the Hawaiian silky 14 in 1 moisturizer, you can spray it first and follow with the oil. Method 3: Use a very light leave in conditioner like the Creme of Nature Argan leave in conditioner  or hotfro leave in conditioner first, follow with your oil or butter and then follow with a creamy moisturizer like the Ors hairepair moisturizer or a styling creme. That's the L. O. C method.  Method 4: You'll use the light leave in conditioner or water, apply the Ors creamy moisturizer or hawaiian silky moisturizer and then your hair oil or butter. This is the L. C. O me

4 Tips For Growing Natural Hair in Ghana

1. Focus on moisture  products The weather here is very dry and your hair needs all the moisture it can get. Your shampoo should infuse moisture into the hair. Do You Oil Your Scalp?

Oiling your scalp is quite a controversial topic within the hair world for the reason that some advocate that you do so to help prevent dry scalp whilst others are of the view that your sebum is enough to hydrate your scalp. The question is how much sebum do you have? Is it enough? The main concern with oiling your scalp has to do with clogging the pores with thick oils that prevent your scalp from receiving the nourishment it needs as well as adding to the sebum you have. In some cases, I've found my sebum production to be low and as such oiling the scalp was a good way of ensuring no dryness. On the other hand, when I go overboard with the application of the oil, I experience itchy scalp. When you oil your scalp, it doesn't need to be a daily routine if your scalp doesn't like it. Itchy scalp means you need to cleanse it and applying oils to the scalp might require regular cleansing. There are people with scalp conditions that can only be soothed with oiling the sca

Why Your Natural Hair Is Dry

As for this issue of dry natural hair,  the one advice I'll give you is trial and error with products and techniques. You don't sleep with a satin cap to protect the hair at night.  The hair is exposed to the sun which ultimately will suck up the moisture in your hair.  Your deep conditioner or wash routine isn't effective so you may need to switch things up.  Your hair spritz isn't working or you aren't diligent with it.  Find heavy butters to seal your hair. Coconut oil is known to penetrate the strands thus it won't seal in the moisture.  Lastly,  you may not be drinking enough water or hydrate the hair.  How do you combat dry natural hair?

How To: Use Essential Oils

I have about two essential oils- tea tree oil and peppermint oil. I use these cautiously as I'm not a fan of tingling sensation from products. 1. For now, I use it in my oil mixes. I recently added a few more drops as I've since added more oils to it.  Do I notice growth with these essential oils? I do. That's the reason why I added them to the oil mix. As for the sealing oil, I'd rather not do that to prevent all week tingling Lol.  2. The other way I wish I could use the essential oils is in my deep conditioner but the issue is I wouldn't want anything getting into my eyes especially with the burning sensation associated with these essential oils.  3. For scalp tonic: Add a few drops of your essential oils to water and spray on your scalp. This soothes the scalp, promotes growth as well thickness. It also helps to heal your scalp!  4. Add to your pre shampoo treatments! A few drops in your prepoo masque, oil or clay treatment also works. Because you'll wash of

How To Increase Hair Growth Without Vitamins

There are tons of posts on the advantages of taking hair vitamins but what if you can't afford them? Tea rinses help stop shedding and that's a great way to retain length. In addition, caffeine is said to aid in hair growth too so you get double benefits. Sulphur powder: I have so many ladies who can testify to the awesome growth they get from the Sulphur powder. Onion juice works well because of the high Sulphur content. Thus if you can't get Sulphur powder ( I have some in the shop though) just blend your onion, mix it into your shampoo and let it sit for two weeks. Use that to wash your hair. Yes,  I've done it before.  Jamaican black castor oil or red pimento oil. These are geared towards hair growth. There are other hair growth oils too ( mane choice oils, Sulphur oil, ). Wild growth oil is also effective.

Here's a video of Daphne sharing her hair prayer. https://youtu.be/Lb0rZN0MfKc

3 Tips For Moisturizing and Sealing

Because the weather is pretty much dry, moisturizing and sealing is essential at this time of the year.  Last night, I co washed and went to bed with the wet hair. This morning, my hair was dry and crunchy and couldn't understand why. I skipped leave in conditioner and applied dark and lovely amla legend  oil moisturizer and then the cantu sheabutter hair lotion and sealed with coconut oil. Now, my hair was crunchy prior to the products and it was a not damp after using the lotion so I couldn't style it. It took about 10 minutes for the products to soak in but my hair was so soft and moisturized. The water from co washing had hydrated the hair before the moisturizing. What Might Be Causing Your Dandruff?

Today's post is dedicated  to dandruff, a common hair woe that most of us battle with. If you are an exception, then you must count yourself lucky! So what is dandruff? Dandruff is a scalp condition that causes the skin cells on your scalp to flake and itch. Although it's not contagious, it is sometimes very irritating and quite embarrassing. What causes dandruff? The direct cause of dandruff is a rapid renewal of the skin cells on the scalp. The human skin is composed of layers. The epidermis which is the outermost layer sheds off as new skin cells grow. As this process continues, the old skin cells fall out and  die off. This physiological process produces an amount of flaking which is normal and is usually invisible to the naked eyes. However, in certain people, this process is exaggerated and leads to excessive shedding of skin cells that accumulate on the scalp and clump together with the natural hair oils. The result is unsightly visible flakes that hover their way down t
