Rice water is all about  using what you have in your kitchen to grow your hair. Here's how to prepare rice water rinse to help with  Breakage  Thickness  Shedding  Hair growth  Remember that rice water is a protein treatment hence you shouldn't abuse it. Start off with using it as a rinse to see how your hair responds to it.  Secondly, if you wish to use ot as a leave in conditioner, be sure to start off with once a week to gauge how your hair feels after use. Sometimes, just once a week is enough to strengthen your hair.  In addition, if you are using rice water, take care not to use protein deep conditioners often in order not to have protein overload. Let your moisture based products be your go to products.  The type of rice you use depends on you. Some use black rice, long grain etc. You may experiment with the type of rice to find what suits you or works better.  Using rice water isn't the only thing that will make your hair grow faster! DIY Tea Hair Mist

Image
The caffeine in teas have been acclaimed to be effective in controlling excessive shedding hence I decided to make it a part of our hair growth boot camp challenges. You prepare the tea mist the same way as a rinse except I add oils to the mist. If you can't do the mist, the tea rinse is equally effective. Tea  You can use green tea, black tea or any tea of your choice. I, usually, advice using 1 tea bag first to make sure your hair loves it before increasing the quantity.  I recommend brewing enough mist for 7 days use.  Benefits  Shedding Increasing hair growth  Increasing thickness  Reducing hair breakage  Moringa, amla, Brahmi, Aritha, lemongrass and a lot more teas or herbs can be used the same way. Start off with one tea at a time to determine which one works for you.  With black tea, you should use a moisturizing conditioner or deep conditioner if you use it. It tends to leave the hair hard sometimes.

6 More Ways To Use Aloe Vera On Your Hair

How do you use aloe vera gel or juice on your hair? Cleanser Aloe vera is known as a mild cleanser. In the water only wash regimen, the gel is said to gently clear excess sebum. Leave in If you want a natural leave in, look no further. The Aloe vera gel or juice can serve as a leave in too. In fact, a lot of commercial products make use of it - from shampoo to deep conditioner! Ayurveda (Aritha and Shikakai) Detox Shampoo

Image
Ayurveda has become an integral part of the healthy hair community and especially among those who aim for organic or natural products. I jumped on the amla powder mask and it was OK. For the aritha and shikakai, I have to say that my hair loved the treatment. To prepare : Mixed about three tablespoons of the two powders together. I, actually, mixed enough for my face, hair and whole body and I didn't regret it one bit. I had super soft skin and the mixture didn't strip my hair. I conditioned with cantu sheabutter conditioner (last bit of it). My hair felt like I'd deep conditioned! **Applied creme of nature mango and sheabutter leave in conditioner and Mielle organics hair milk (to buy, call 0502417454). Covered with a scarf to dry it. I really love the feel of my hair and hope to continue to enjoy no setback.

Is Hot Oil Treatment Better Than Prepoo?

Image
Every pre shampoo step contributes to moisture retention therefore prepoo and hot oil treatments, though different, both provide the hair with protection against the impact of shampoo as well as retention of moisture. The question a reader posed was whether hot oil treatments are better than prepoo. Another wanted to know if hot oil treatment is faster to do compared to prepoo. The answers to these questions depend on several factors. If you don't heat up your oil but sit under the hooded dryer for 5 minutes on medium to high heat, the oil gets absorbed faster. Coconut oil has become the go to prepoo and hot oil treatment to prevent hygral fatigue. The heat will allow faster absorption of the oil during the heating process. On the other hand, if the oil is preheated before application, the penetration is equally good. So, which one takes less time? I'll go for hot oil treatment since preheated oil works faster too. With prepoo, you may not have to time to sot under a

How To Use Aloe Vera On Relaxed Hair

Image
Haven dealt with how I use aloe vera on natural hair, why not show you how you can use aloe vera on relaxed hair too. Do share these "How To" posts with friends and family to get them to maintain healthy hair. Apply on your edges. When you want to restore moisture around the edges, just apply the aloe vera on your edges at night. If you don't mind wet edges in the morning, you can do so. I realised my edges stay fresh looking with the aloe vera. I top up with the edges oil mix and call it a night. Cover with a satin cap to prevent staining your cloth. The beauty of this is that I notice an increase in the growth of the hair at the hairline too. Apply to your scalp and massage for a couple of minutes. I extend to the hair and cover with satin cap. Aloe vera will help soothe your itching scalp as well as promote growth. Apply to scalp after relaxer to soothe the scalp. This is the best treatment for scalp burns too. Apply daily for a week to restore the pH of your s

DIY Hair Tonic To Restore Scalp PH

Image
Tonics make the hair look glossier, which is viewed by many people as a sign of healthy hair. They help hold the hair in place, making it easier to style. Other benefits include moisturizing dry hair, lubricating a dry scalp, reducing split ends and broken hair, and helping to control dandruff.(Source: https://www.reuzel.com)  One of thr hair tonics I've created helps with my scalp. To restore the PH of your scalp, all you need are : Fresh aloe vera gel or juice. I use the Lily of the desert aloe gel brand. Rose water Jamaican black castor oil or emu oil or jojoba oil  1. Mix all these in a spray bottle and refrigerate it. When it's  a bit cold,  it has a soothing effect too on the scalp. Use the spritz nights for about a week. Quick and Easy DIY Liquid Black Soap

Image
Do you know about African Black Soap? Did you know you can use it as a clarifying shampoo? As I move into cheaper but effective natural hair products for my hair, the most immediate need was a clarifying shampoo. Yet I wanted the shampoo to have some moisturizing abilities too in addition to the clarifying. Here's the recipe I used. African black soap aka alata Samina Vegetable glycerin  Coconut oil I used the glycerin for its humectant ability as my honey is finished. I added the back soap to warm water and allowed it to melt. After that, I added a fee tablespoon full of glycerin and a bit of coconut oil. I used this to clean my hair and it was quite a good feeling. I'll venture into some commercial products but not now. With the ORS aloe shampoo and this black soap shampoo, I think I'm set in the shampoo area.

How To Increase Hair Growth Without Vitamins

Image
There are tons of posts on the advantages of taking hair vitamins but what if you can't afford them? Tea rinses help stop shedding and that's a great way to retain length. In addition, caffeine is said to aid in hair growth too so you get double benefits. Sulphur powder: I have so many ladies who can testify to the awesome growth they get from the Sulphur powder. Onion juice works well because of the high Sulphur content. Thus if you can't get Sulphur powder ( I have some in the shop though) just blend your onion, mix it into your shampoo and let it sit for two weeks. Use that to wash your hair. Yes,  I've done it before.  Jamaican black castor oil or red pimento oil. These are geared towards hair growth. There are other hair growth oils too ( mane choice oils, Sulphur oil, ). Wild growth oil is also effective.

How To Treat Scab Hair

Image
The solution to scab hair doesn't lie in deep conditioning daily; it's about keeping the moisture in the hair 24/7. How can you do this? Aloe vera, hibiscus leave in and rose water glycerin spritz sealed with cantu sheabutter gel oil. I began using aloe vera  early March and in a matter of 7 days, my hair was considerably hydrated.  At night, I massage fresh aloe vera gel on the hair then spray the hibiscus on the hair and apply a bit of Jbco oil mix. In the morning, I spritz with rose water mix, mix a bit of Mielle organics hair milk, Jbco mix and the gel oil and apply it to seal. The way I use these products vary on a daily basis but the key thing is that they are the products  that give me the result I want.  This has been my routine ever since I big chopped and that's what got rid of the dry hair. Don't Dilute Your Jamaican Black Castor Oil

Image
At least not too much with other oils. A major complaint with using Jamaican Black Castor Oil is the thickness of the oil. The oil is so thick that some people mix or dilute with other oils to thin the castor oil out before use. Others also find their  scalp too itchy when the Jamaican Black Castor Oil is used directly on the Scalp. Well,  every product is made to operate at its optimum best thus when you dilute it,  you tend to reduce the potency. After making this discovery,  it's better to rethink about how to get the most out of the Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

Easy DIY Coconut Water Leave In Conditioner

Image
Coconut water tastes great and you can equally allow your hair to also benefit from its nutrients.  Coconut oil is very popular in the hair care world. However, it doesn't work for everyone so there has to be a way to enjoy the benefits of coconut oil without suffering any damages. Coconut water is the alternative way to get the benefit of coconut oil.  In Ghana, coconut water shouldn't be difficult to get since we have sellers all over the place.  Watch the video to see how I prepared the coconut water leave in conditioner.

Castor Aloe Scalp Treatment

Image
I created a castor oil and aloe vera scalp treatment to enjoy the benefits of both. After a fresh relaxer, you'd want to attend to your scalp to provide it the nourishment it needs. I used fresh aloe vera gel and mixed with Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I mix enough for about 3 days to prevent it from going bad though essential oils do prevent that. I add a few drops of peppermint oil to the scalp treatment.  A healthy scalp ensures healthy growth and that's the key to my success. You can  use this in combination with your Pre shampoo treatment.  Let me know when you try this recipe.

4 Easy Ways To Use Palm Kernel Oil

Image
If you've been to  the village, then,  you'd probably have eaten food prepared with either Sheabutter or fried with palm kernel oil.   I do know that we look at Palm Kernel oil with a side eye due to its awful odour thereby neglecting its  benefits for our hair.  Masking the smell isn't a big deal.  You can use what our mothers use in masking the smell of Sheabutter. It is commonly called negro pepper aka hwentia. So, since you know how to deal with the smell,  here's how you can incorporate  the palm kernel oil in your hair routine. Hot oil treatment Haven talked about the importance of hot oil treatment and how to do it,  it's very easy to use palm kernel oil for such a great treatment. I look forward to showing how I've done so very soon. Prepoo The almighty Prepoo treatment can't be left out when  taking about palm kernel oil.  I won't reinvent the wheel by talking about the composition of palm kernel oil but you'll see the benefits after using i

Baking Soda Honey Mask

Image
The baking soda honey mask was a recipe a friend shared when I noticed her skin was smoother and clearer. I simply had to  try it and at the end of the day,  I didn't regret it all! I'm also glad it's part of May Skin care goals. Simply mix a tablespoon of honey and a teaspoon of baking soda. I added some aloe vera gel too. It feels like a facial scrub when using the mix so I guess that's a double benefit there. I applied the mix on dry skin but wet skin is probably better. I scrubbed the face gently and rinsed with cold water. I followed your  with  a lotion moisturizer which I use when  I want to wear make up. I use oils at night  time instead. My face felt  smooth  and soft after rinsing. I have three more treatments with this mask and I can't wait to do them!

Baking Soda Scalp Scrub

Image
The world of DIY hair care isn't complete without kitchen products including baking soda and though the actual Scrub I used was the ORS scalp Scrub,  I couldn't have done it without baking soda which therefore, makes it a baking soda scalp scrub. Since this week's wash day experience is all about something new,  I was really excited about the scrub. The ORS scalp scrub has been in my stash for over a year, waiting for me to purchase  baking soda which is a needed ingredient. Well,  I finally, bought one at shop rite, Accra mall and did a scalp scrub with it. The preparation of the  scrub is easy and the results were pretty good. It is recommended that the scrub is done once or twice a month so that's what I'll be doing though I may probably go beyond the month. To begin the process,  you'll need a mixing bowl, the baking soda also called bicarbonate of soda, ORS scalp Scrub and a spoon to mix the ingredients. In the video,  I show you the whole process from the

DIY Amla Powder Hair Mask

Image
In this post, I will  share a DIY amla powder hair mask with you. I love using amla powder so I just had to film the process this time. The purpose of the treatment was to not only strengthen the hair but give it some boost for the harmattan. As the season draws to a close, we have to prepare the hair for the hot season that's to come which can dry out the hair. In my opinion, my hair is thriving better than ever due to taking preventive measures. Therefore,  I'll be doing more hair treatments to give it all nourishment it needs. I'm not doing experiments, I'm using products I know already. If it's not the case,  I'll alert you. When washing out the Amla hair mask, do so under running water and use a wide tooth comb to get rid of particles. Here's the tutorial [YouTube=https://youtu.be/zGtH3mI7uzU] What did you do this weekend?

Cooking oil On Your Hair

Image
Have you tried cooking oil on your hair? Well,  I have. I remember just doing so out of curiosity. What I used was frytol cooking oil- the one made from peanut or groundnut butter. I had run out of coconut oil, I think and needed to prepoo before using a shampoo which contain sulphates. I remember scanning my brain to find out which oil I could use. I went to the kitchen cabinet and frytol cooking oil was the first thing I saw! I poured some into my hands and it was quite thick. I prepooed with it for some hours . Unfortunately, I don't remember if I shared the results on this blog. What I recall is having very oily hair after the prepoo. It was worth trying though. Now, after all these years, my definition of cooking oil goes beyond what we use in the kitchen. I don't use frytol again; I've switched to a healthier one, the sunflower oil. I might even move to coconut oil very soon for some basci frying eg omelettes. Most of us limit our understanding of cooking oil t
