Do You Oil Your Scalp?

Oiling your scalp is quite a controversial topic within the hair world for the reason that some advocate that you do so to help prevent dry scalp whilst others are of the view that your sebum is enough to hydrate your scalp. The question is how much sebum do you have? Is it enough? The main concern with oiling your scalp has to do with clogging the pores with thick oils that prevent your scalp from receiving the nourishment it needs as well as adding to the sebum you have. In some cases, I've found my sebum production to be low and as such oiling the scalp was a good way of ensuring no dryness. On the other hand, when I go overboard with the application of the oil, I experience itchy scalp. When you oil your scalp, it doesn't need to be a daily routine if your scalp doesn't like it. Itchy scalp means you need to cleanse it and applying oils to the scalp might require regular cleansing. There are people with scalp conditions that can only be soothed with oiling the sca

Add Silk Amino Acids To Your Regimen

First and foremost, what is silk amino acid ingredient and what does it do? Read the previous post ( Know Your Protein Part One ) But, the question is, "how do I  incorporate  silk amino acid in my regimen? If you have silk amino in  powder or liquid form  that you want to use together with your hair products, you can do so through the following ways. Pre-relaxer treatement: Use the liquid one straight on your hair a few hours before relaxing. This is to serve as a buffer against the relaxer. Apply to your ends and leave to dry Add it to your leave-in conditioners for the hair to absorp it. This nourishes your hair and prevent breakage.  Add to your Deep conditioner mixture to provide a boost in the elasticity of your hair.  As a rinse, the powder can be used to restore the protein in the hair.  I  got my chi silk infusion and haven't slept on it at all! It's a must have for all relaxed hair ladies. References http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t

How To Comb Natural Hair After Braids

Let's do away with the cornrows and braids preparation and installation  and focus on how you comb the hair after take down.  Many ladies have trial and error with products and techniques to find what works for them. The basic step is finger detangling first to remove knots and tangles.  Some continue to finger detangle with the comb under running water. Experiment and see which one reduced breakage for you.  If you don't wish to wash,  just finger detangling and the oil will get the job done. Warm oil such as coconut or olive oils make detangling quite stress free. Leave your hair in sections too after removing the knots and tangles.  Finger detangling first  Apply a lot of oils and f in Nigeria detangle again Use a product with slip and wash in sections. You can use a conditioner Don't shampoo hair that hasn't been detangled.  Keep the hair in sections and use a wide tooth comb to detangle. You can then still use your fingers or move to a medium tooth

4 Wash Day Tips For Relaxed Hair

There are a variety of things you can do  to enhance your wash day experience. Prepoo treatment is not overrated. I know some bloggers don't see the need but do what works for you. When I ceased doing the Prepoo, I into get the same moisturized hair. Use heat to deep condition. Unfortunately, I know getting a steam cap is a problem but do try to get one for your hair. It makes a huge difference . Air drying in sections helps stretch the hair and leave you with smooth hair too. I don't worry about too much shrinkage during the air drying. Use detangling products especially shampoos and leave in conditioners to reduce knots and tangles when manipulating the hair.

Can You Wash Relaxed Hair Once A Month?

When naturals go for weeks without wash, it seems to be the norm. A few years ago, I wondered if I could skip washing my relaxed hair for a month due to the stressful schedule I had. Well, it's sad to say that I was too scared to try it and with time, I eventually cut the hair due to improper care.  Today,  though,  I have a different mindset. I do think you can go a month without washing but it depends on the regimen you have,  the state of your hair as well as how you protect your hair. I mean it's easy to skip washing if you ask in weaves but if you wear your hair out daily,  how can that be possible?  I though of a few products that can help with this.  Dry shampoo can help clean the hair and stretch your wash days.  Moisturize and seal with light products. For me,  I'll be using a bit of  the Cantu sheabutter anti frizz foam leave in conditioner and seal with oil mix once a day.  Green House Effect or baggying method can also keep your hair moisturized

4 Easy Ways To Use Palm Kernel Oil

If you've been to  the village, then,  you'd probably have eaten food prepared with either Sheabutter or fried with palm kernel oil.   I do know that we look at Palm Kernel oil with a side eye due to its awful odour thereby neglecting its  benefits for our hair.  Masking the smell isn't a big deal.  You can use what our mothers use in masking the smell of Sheabutter. It is commonly called negro pepper aka hwentia. So, since you know how to deal with the smell,  here's how you can incorporate  the palm kernel oil in your hair routine. Hot oil treatment Haven talked about the importance of hot oil treatment and how to do it,  it's very easy to use palm kernel oil for such a great treatment. I look forward to showing how I've done so very soon. Prepoo The almighty Prepoo treatment can't be left out when  taking about palm kernel oil.  I won't reinvent the wheel by talking about the composition of palm kernel oil but you'll see the benefits after using i

Four After Braid Take Down Tips

After I took down the braid, I had to make sure the hair was in good shape after no moisture for weeks. I used coconut oil as prepoo treatment and washed with Sheamoisture African black soap shampoo and followed up with the Superfruit conditioner. I used Cantu sheabutter gel oil only for the hair to feel hard so I washed it out with the Cantu sheabutter Co wash. This brought to mine how to care for  the hair after braids so you don't lose length or cause breakage. Use coconut oil to aid with finger detangling. Using fingers and coconut oil will let the whole process go faster and with much better results.  Don't shampoo if you've not detangled. Putting  water in your hair will cause it to tangle more.  Use a wide tooth comb first to detangle before washing to remove shed hair too.  Deep conditioning after washing the  hair will restore both protein  and moisture so be sure to  use at least a bit if light protein.  These are the few tips that help me t

Wash Day featuring We Naturals hot oil treatment

I had to wash my hair but since I'd been getting questions about the We Naturals hot oil treatment, I decided to do a video of it. After the hot oil treatment, I washed with  Sheamoisture African black soap shampoo and deep conditioned with Cantu sheabutter deep treatment mask.  I used the Cantu sheabutter anti frizz foam leave in conditioner and set the hair on flex rods. That  result was really good as usual. This kind of styling makes it easy for me to wear my hair out during the  week. I got to wash the  hair when I can and apply oils to the strands regularly.  [Youtube=https://youtu.be/tUdqtvk5o-c]

3 Ways To Neutralize Relaxed Hair

When you relax your hair,  the relaxer changes the pH of your hair. To restore the pH, you need to Neutralize the hair. There are 3 products that can help you. Neutralizing shampoo: Some salons  have neutralizing shampoos but to be safe,  carry your own bottle to the salon. The one I use is the ors creamy aloe shampoo. Apple Cider Vinegar: Dilute apple cider vinegar in water and apply to the hair after rinsing out the relaxer. The vinegar will restore the pH of the hair. [caption width="278" align="aligncentre"] Roux Porosity Control Conditioner [/caption] Roux porosity control: This line helps a lot and I loved it when I used it.  All the products claim to restore pH balance so give it a try. There are other porosity control products you can add to your stash.

3 Deep Conditioning Mistakes To Avoid

After deep conditioning according to the directions on products, my hair has certainly gained it's softness back. It stays moisturized for longer periods too. In all this, I've learnt 3 mistakes that can occur with your deep conditioning process. 1. Not using the product as directed: That was my first mistake with deep conditioners. Most dcs take about 30 minuted to an hour to work if you use body hat but 15 minuted under a hooded dryer or steamer. I hardly went beyond 5 minutes with the deep conditioners and that was my downfall. Now that I can't cut my hair again,  I have to be diligent in keep the hair healthy. 2. Not using the right deep conditioner: Using a regular conditioner and leaving it on for even 20 hours doesn't make it deep conditioning. I've personally been against using eggs because it's unable to penetrate the hair. To benefit from deep conditioning,  you need to get a deep conditioner aka steaming cream. 3. Not deep conditioning often: The ladi

Do You Heat Your Conditioner?

The heating of conditioner is something I learnt from a hair blogger where you heat only the deep conditioner you'll be using to make it  warm for application. This heating isn't new to me; I used to  do it with queen helene cholesterol using warm water as directed. This time,  you rather put the conditioner in the warm water. After trying this with  the Cantu sheabutter for natural hair Deep Treatment Masque,  I just had to find a way to incorporate it in my regimen daily. [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="680" caption="Sheamoisture products available in the shop"] [/caption] In addition  to speeding up the absorption of the deep conditioner,   I found that the deep conditioner had extra slip because of the added oils which were also heated in the process. These two benefits of heating deep conditioners  before application can save you time and money as well as make your wash days easier.

3 Subtle Causes Of Hair Breakage

When we talk about hair breakage,  one of the things we do is to stay away from combs and heating tools. However,  there are subtle causes of hair breakage that need to be addressed. The first is your nails. When your nails are broken, it can snag your hair casting breakage. Little snags here and there will in due time become visible damage. Trim or file the ends of your nails before washing your hair. The second subtle cause of hair breakage is your moisturizing and seeing technique. Most often,  moisturizing and sealing in sections is key to preventing breakage. However,  care needs to be taken when sectioning the hair,  either with combs or fingers as the process itself can cause breakage. If you run your ends vigorously in the name of getting the hair to absorb products, you are creating room for broken ends. The last one is how you sleep. If you toss and turn like me,  then,  take measures to ensure your hair is in a satin cap,  loosely twisted or bunned. When you cover with the c

Scentless Hair Products

Ever since I fell ill,  my sense of smell has been  heightened, something I can't seem to understand. Usually, I'd apply a mild scented product just for the hair to smell good but lately,  fee absence of any scent is most welcomed. An example is the ors hairepair moisture cream that I still can't stand. I mean I used to think being pregnant back then was the reason for the dislike for the smell but now,  I'm definitely not pregnant. My nose just doesn't like the  scent though it's not unpleasant. When I pass my hands through the hair,  I'm glad I don't smell anything afterwards. I'm not sure if the sickness has anything to do with this change; I most certainly wouldn't want this to be permanent as I love my hair to smell good. Even my favourite cantu sheabutter lotion seems to put me off. I'll just ensure this and hope it's a temporal change.

Hair Vitamins Won't Give You Healthy Hair

Lately,  hair vitamins have become a go-to  for ladies on a healthy hair journey with the assumption that  these vitamins will give them the healthy hair they want. Let me bust your bubble and point it out that  taking mane choice,  hairfinity, nature's bounty or whatever vitamins won't give you healthy hair. What will give you a healthy hair is a proper hair routine/regimen as well as shampoo,  conditioner,  leave in and oils. These hair vitamins only aim at increasing hair growth; what's the use of getting growth only for the hair to break off due to improper hair care habits. The same thing applies to using Jamaican Black Castor Oil In the hopes that your hair will be healthy overnight. These oils won't work if all you do is continue treating your hair in the old ways. Get a hair regimen and use the  hair vitamins to supplement your efforts. I don't depend on theses growth  aids to get strong and healthy hair; I use hair products and techniques daily and weekly t

What's A Healthy Hair Journey?

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="199"] top knot bunMy meditation these days about hair have changed drastically from yearning for what others have to getting what  I want.[/caption] Until somewhere June 2011, I had no idea that ladies had taken matters into their own hands to grow healthy hair. A Healthy Hair journey is all about keeping your hair healthy. So why is length such  a big deal? It's because healthy hair can give you the retention of growth and ultimately translating into length. My  journey is such  a difficult one to comprehend. But my last big chop hasn't necessarily set me back. If anything  at all,  it's helped me achieve what I wanted which is healthy hair.. The dyed hair is gone and I'm good. The mantra that most people recite is health over length and it's rightly so. The desire for healthy hair is so strong that I don't mind the big chops. They gratify a desire for health. That said,  I don't want t

#1 Tip To Stop Biotin Acne Breakout

It's not everyone who takes biotin and goes Scott free with regard to acne breakouts so today,  I'm sharing my 1 tip to stop biotin acne breakout. Biotin has been known to aid in hair growth and nails growth. Personally, I've been taking biotin in different forms for about 3 years now and counting. [caption id="attachment_2897" align="aligncenter" width="300"] biotin[/caption] Biotin, although water soluble, can create havoc if taken in excess in the form of acne breakout. A lot of solutions have been given to curb this problem. The first suggest is to increase your water intake in order to dissolve the biotin in the system. Others also advocate starting from a low dose and gradually work your way up to a larger dose. Even though ladies try all these techniques, these seem to have yielded nothing. Recently, a friend complained about biotin breakout so I put to test what I'd suspected all this time and she had amazing results within days. A

Why You Should Chelate Your Natural Hair

I'm going to talk about the need to chelate your natural hair. Chelating and Clarifying hair, to the best thing of my knowledge, are some things relaxed ladies do very often.  Whereas naturals may not be using a relaxer (some relax their edges), most do use commercial products.  Even using natural products can still cause build up and as a result, a lot of ladies focus on cleaning the hair with a sulfate based shampoo. What about the build up from the water you use to wash the hair in the first place? Have you ever considered why even after clarifying your hair,  you still feel the strands are coated? The kind of water we use especially for those who purchase from the tankers and also use water from the polytanks like me can hinder our whole wash day purpose and result.  Most of these waters are hard, meaning the mineral deposit from them will create build up that can only be cleared using a Chelating shampoo. In addition to this, if you Co wash more often, then,  you'll have a
