4 Ways To Moisturise Your Hair

Image
There are several options available for moisturizing and sealing your hair. You'll need to try them and find what works for you.  Method 1:Using your leave in conditioner (Especially if it is creamy or lotion). Apply to the hair and follow with an oil. Do this daily if you have to in order to keep the moisture in the hair.  Method 2: Using a hair moisturizer. If you are using Ors hairepair, S curl no drip moisturizer or the Hawaiian silky 14 in 1 moisturizer, you can spray it first and follow with the oil. Method 3: Use a very light leave in conditioner like the Creme of Nature Argan leave in conditioner  or hotfro leave in conditioner first, follow with your oil or butter and then follow with a creamy moisturizer like the Ors hairepair moisturizer or a styling creme. That's the L. O. C method.  Method 4: You'll use the light leave in conditioner or water, apply the Ors creamy moisturizer or hawaiian silky moisturizer and then your hair oil or butter. This is the L. C. O me

Wash Day for Week 1 February, 2020

Image
I'm going to be more detailed in this wash to help you understand how I wash my hair. This will be a series so stay tuned. To wash, I use any shampoo available. I have hotfro shampoo and groganics shampoo I alternate. I use one shampoo per week as a first step to wash my hair either home or at the salon.  Assuming you are using any of these, the Doo gro tingling shampoo will be step 1  Step. 2. After rinsing off the shampoo, I follow up with the hotfro conditioner or groganics conditioner and leave for 1 minute and rinse out.  Step 3. At this point, I apply the hotfro leave in conditioner (Red label) or if I have mega growth leave in conditioner, I use that. If I have Hawaiian Silky moisturizer, I use that or S curl No Drip moisturizer or the mega growth anti breakage strengthener. I like to add the amla oil at this point or the hotfro oil mix before the rollers are done. Step 4. I don't use any oil in the hair again after it is dry. I use a hair pomade on the scalp, here, it c

4 Tips For Growing Natural Hair in Ghana

Image
1. Focus on moisture  products The weather here is very dry and your hair needs all the moisture it can get. Your shampoo should infuse moisture into the hair. Pre shampoo treatment aka pre poo with light oils prevent your shampoo from stripping your hair. The deep conditioning process should also boost moisture in your hair. Kindly put that eye treatment somewhere and pay attention to moisture products. The simple test is to read the ingredients and see where the protein is. Anywhere at the top 5 ingredients is a likely hard protein and further down, you get medium and light protein. The light ones are better since your hair needs list bit of boosting once in a while. Your moisturizer should be moisture based and I've found alternating between creamy and liquid moisturizers is  very helpful.  2. Hair type helps: Simple Google to know your hair to guide you select suitable products for your hair.  3. Read about your hair: After you identify your hair type, read about. Find bloggers

DIY Tea Hair Mist

Image
The caffeine in teas have been acclaimed to be effective in controlling excessive shedding hence I decided to make it a part of our hair growth boot camp challenges. You prepare the tea mist the same way as a rinse except I add oils to the mist. If you can't do the mist, the tea rinse is equally effective. Tea  You can use green tea, black tea or any tea of your choice. I, usually, advice using 1 tea bag first to make sure your hair loves it before increasing the quantity.  I recommend brewing enough mist for 7 days use.  Benefits  Shedding Increasing hair growth  Increasing thickness  Reducing hair breakage  Moringa, amla, Brahmi, Aritha, lemongrass and a lot more teas or herbs can be used the same way. Start off with one tea at a time to determine which one works for you.  With black tea, you should use a moisturizing conditioner or deep conditioner if you use it. It tends to leave the hair hard sometimes.

How To Treat Scab Hair

Image
The solution to scab hair doesn't lie in deep conditioning daily; it's about keeping the moisture in the hair 24/7. How can you do this? Aloe vera, hibiscus leave in and rose water glycerin spritz sealed with cantu sheabutter gel oil. I began using aloe vera  early March and in a matter of 7 days, my hair was considerably hydrated.  At night, I massage fresh aloe vera gel on the hair then spray the hibiscus on the hair and apply a bit of Jbco oil mix. In the morning, I spritz with rose water mix, mix a bit of Mielle organics hair milk, Jbco mix and the gel oil and apply it to seal. The way I use these products vary on a daily basis but the key thing is that they are the products  that give me the result I want.  This has been my routine ever since I big chopped and that's what got rid of the dry hair. Ways To Protect Your Hair This Harmattan Without Protective Styles

Image
If you are like me and don't see harmattan as the time to wear wigs and weaves nor braids  then,  you have to develop a regimen that can provide you with moisture and fortify your hair against the  harsh winds and weather.  The first thing I recommend is decide on how you'll protect your ends from the harsh  weather. You can wear buns or roll and tuck in styles. You can also do halo braids with or ponytail with extensions to keep the ends from breakage.  You should also increase the moisture routines such as deep conditioning twice a week and sealing the hair with butters. Another way to protect your hair without weaves and wigs is to do green house effect or baggying about thrice a month.  My intention is to stop braiding when I can pull the hair into a good pony so if that  happens by December, then,  I definitely be weave and wig free for the harmattan like I used to do.

Protect Your Hair Before Swimming

Image
If you happen to love the beach side or pool side, then, you may have had salty or extremely dry hair after taking a dip in the water. To protect your hair from the chlorine in the pool water,  you can use sheabutter or petroleum jelly to  prevent the water from getting into the strands - the kind of protection you give your hair prior to a touch up.  I prefer Vaseline since it's very thick. I put some in  my supplies and add a rinse out conditioner. This is to wash the hair after swimming  before getting home.  There are swimmers conditioners too -  saw some at max mart and other shops at the malls. How do you protect your hair before swimming even when wearing a cap?

10 Ways To Use Hair Oils

Image
There are a variety of hair oils one can use on the hair to achieve healthy hair. From Coconut oil, castor oil, grape seed oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, Avocado oil, and also essential oils. In the video, I share 10  Ways you can use your hair oils and derive maximum benefit.

Castor Aloe Scalp Treatment

Image
I created a castor oil and aloe vera scalp treatment to enjoy the benefits of both. After a fresh relaxer, you'd want to attend to your scalp to provide it the nourishment it needs. I used fresh aloe vera gel and mixed with Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I mix enough for about 3 days to prevent it from going bad though essential oils do prevent that. I add a few drops of peppermint oil to the scalp treatment.  A healthy scalp ensures healthy growth and that's the key to my success. You can  use this in combination with your Pre shampoo treatment.  Let me know when you try this recipe.

4 Easy Ways To Use Palm Kernel Oil

Image
If you've been to  the village, then,  you'd probably have eaten food prepared with either Sheabutter or fried with palm kernel oil.   I do know that we look at Palm Kernel oil with a side eye due to its awful odour thereby neglecting its  benefits for our hair.  Masking the smell isn't a big deal.  You can use what our mothers use in masking the smell of Sheabutter. It is commonly called negro pepper aka hwentia. So, since you know how to deal with the smell,  here's how you can incorporate  the palm kernel oil in your hair routine. Hot oil treatment Haven talked about the importance of hot oil treatment and how to do it,  it's very easy to use palm kernel oil for such a great treatment. I look forward to showing how I've done so very soon. Prepoo The almighty Prepoo treatment can't be left out when  taking about palm kernel oil.  I won't reinvent the wheel by talking about the composition of palm kernel oil but you'll see the benefits after using i

Four After Braid Take Down Tips

Image
After I took down the braid, I had to make sure the hair was in good shape after no moisture for weeks. I used coconut oil as prepoo treatment and washed with Sheamoisture African black soap shampoo and followed up with the Superfruit conditioner. I used Cantu sheabutter gel oil only for the hair to feel hard so I washed it out with the Cantu sheabutter Co wash. This brought to mine how to care for  the hair after braids so you don't lose length or cause breakage. Use coconut oil to aid with finger detangling. Using fingers and coconut oil will let the whole process go faster and with much better results.  Don't shampoo if you've not detangled. Putting  water in your hair will cause it to tangle more.  Use a wide tooth comb first to detangle before washing to remove shed hair too.  Deep conditioning after washing the  hair will restore both protein  and moisture so be sure to  use at least a bit if light protein.  These are the few tips that help me t

3 Deep Conditioning Mistakes To Avoid

Image
After deep conditioning according to the directions on products, my hair has certainly gained it's softness back. It stays moisturized for longer periods too. In all this, I've learnt 3 mistakes that can occur with your deep conditioning process. 1. Not using the product as directed: That was my first mistake with deep conditioners. Most dcs take about 30 minuted to an hour to work if you use body hat but 15 minuted under a hooded dryer or steamer. I hardly went beyond 5 minutes with the deep conditioners and that was my downfall. Now that I can't cut my hair again,  I have to be diligent in keep the hair healthy. 2. Not using the right deep conditioner: Using a regular conditioner and leaving it on for even 20 hours doesn't make it deep conditioning. I've personally been against using eggs because it's unable to penetrate the hair. To benefit from deep conditioning,  you need to get a deep conditioner aka steaming cream. 3. Not deep conditioning often: The ladi

Hair Vitamins Won't Give You Healthy Hair

Image
Lately,  hair vitamins have become a go-to  for ladies on a healthy hair journey with the assumption that  these vitamins will give them the healthy hair they want. Let me bust your bubble and point it out that  taking mane choice,  hairfinity, nature's bounty or whatever vitamins won't give you healthy hair. What will give you a healthy hair is a proper hair routine/regimen as well as shampoo,  conditioner,  leave in and oils. These hair vitamins only aim at increasing hair growth; what's the use of getting growth only for the hair to break off due to improper hair care habits. The same thing applies to using Jamaican Black Castor Oil In the hopes that your hair will be healthy overnight. These oils won't work if all you do is continue treating your hair in the old ways. Get a hair regimen and use the  hair vitamins to supplement your efforts. I don't depend on theses growth  aids to get strong and healthy hair; I use hair products and techniques daily and weekly t

How to do the Inversion Method #2

I'll go over how to do the inversion method for the sake of those visiting for the first time or hearing about this hair growth technique for the first time. This technique is aimed at growing one inch of hair in 7 days. You do it continuously for a week, once in a month. Pregnant women are not advised to do this method. There are other categories of people prohibited from doing the inversion method for hair growth so do read on it before doing it. If you doubt your condition, google it and see the suitability of the inversion method for you. I nearly skipped today's inversion method because of a headache but the Scalp Massage really helped. All you need is your natural oil and a timer. Some advice you warm the oil, enough to dip your hair into it and not be scalded. This met I set the timer to 4 minutes after applying oil on the Scalp. I began to massage as the head was tilted forward for the inversion. Inversion Method : 3 Benefits Inversion Challenge 24th November-1st Decemb

Dos and Don'ts For Relaxed Hair In Ghana

Image
There's a general post already about relaxed hair dos and Don'ts but it's been requested that  I do dos and don'ts of relaxed hair specific to Ghana, especially,  with the kinds of stylist we have. Dos 1.  Take your own neutralizing shampoo, protein deep conditioner and leave in. If you have apple cider vinegar, add it as well as roux porosity control. Some stylists don't have anything. 2. Keep an eye on the comb used to spread the relaxer. Some stylist will scratch your scalp with it. 3. Be sure the stylist isn't too busy when applying relaxer ; she might leave it on for too long. 4. Do base your scalp if possible before going to the salon.  5. Also,  in case you want to do your prepoo or hot oil treatment, do it yourself before going. You may be surprised to know that some stylist will dissuade you from doing these treatments with the claim that they will damage your hair when they are the reason our hair isn’t thriving.  6. Guide the stylist to  deep conditio

Why You Should Chelate Your Natural Hair

Image
I'm going to talk about the need to chelate your natural hair. Chelating and Clarifying hair, to the best thing of my knowledge, are some things relaxed ladies do very often.  Whereas naturals may not be using a relaxer (some relax their edges), most do use commercial products.  Even using natural products can still cause build up and as a result, a lot of ladies focus on cleaning the hair with a sulfate based shampoo. What about the build up from the water you use to wash the hair in the first place? Have you ever considered why even after clarifying your hair,  you still feel the strands are coated? The kind of water we use especially for those who purchase from the tankers and also use water from the polytanks like me can hinder our whole wash day purpose and result.  Most of these waters are hard, meaning the mineral deposit from them will create build up that can only be cleared using a Chelating shampoo. In addition to this, if you Co wash more often, then,  you'll have a

3 Tips To Help You Choose Your Henna

Image
After sharing ways to use henna on your hair , here are 3 tips to help you choose your henna. Since you've decided to dabble in henna , why not check which type is most suitable for your hair. I learnt a lot from my henna mishap (see here ) Based on these, I'm offering you 3 tips to help you choose your henna *** Avoid market henna. Let's be honest here. The market henna is obviously cheap so that's the first place you might be tempted to purchase your henna. What you should know is that there are different sources of the henna. Some are grown in the North, some are imported. It's very difficult to determine the source of your henna as you don't have the expert's eyes. In addition to this, market henna is quite grainy and leaves a bunch of left over grains stuck in your strands. It's also difficult to determine if your henna is body art quality. (Sheabutter cottage and urbanmakes.com have awesome henna). *** Be sure you are buying pure henna . Some Henna

Bucket Wash Method For Natural & Relaxed Hair

Image
The bucket wash method is a term I coined out of using a bucket instead of a shower head to rinse out products. If you've been using henna, dye or clay treatments, then, you know the challenge of keeping your bathroom from getting stained. It's very easy when you use the bucket method wash for relaxed & natural hair. All you need is a bucket like the one pictured above and a source of water. [YouTube=https://youtu.be/76DVWF0A3XQ]

The Coily Queen Regimen

Image
I came across the coily queen regimen when I was surfing for information on how to keep 4c natural hair moisturized for long periods. As part of my non conservative attitude towards my hair, I'm going to do a few hair regimens to help with moisture as I mentioned in my  6 months post big cho p Video. The basic requirements of the coily queen regimen is to shampoo twice a week, deep condition twice a week, apply leave in conditioner daily for 3 weeks, daily scalp oiling and massaging. You can find out more here . This is the regimen for September (we are about 15 people trying it) and at the end, I'll share my verdict. The aim is to increase moisture in the hair, reduce tangles and single strand knots. If you'd like to join this test drive, just follow the instructions or steps as listed by coily queen. The sheamoisture yucca and baobab shampoo will be used, kinky Curly knot leave in, body butter coil crown deep conditioner, grape seed oil, Jane Carter Solution Nourish and S

Wash Day With Sheamoisture Yucca and Baobab Shampoo

Image
Upon reflections and meditations, I've realized that perhaps my knotted ends have to do with my current twists. In addition to that, I often get tired of the gruelling  minutes spent detangling so I stop and use either the shampoo and running water to continue the detangling routine. These led me to rethink my regimen and where it will lead me. I hadn't shampooed in a while so I brought out sheamoisture yucca shampoo (thanks Diana for this gift). First of all, this shampoo smells like perfume - deliciously sweet! However, it doesn't have the same slip as the coconut and hibiscus shampoo. I topped up with the hello hydration conditioner and two hand full of coconut oil (I'm evaluating this oil in my regimen). I find my hair responding well to grapeseed oil. So, I really spent time detangling the ends which was such a daunting task. I'm happy I want to wear my own hair throughout September (more about that soon). Despite all the efforts to smoothen the ends, the
