4 Tips For Growing Natural Hair in Ghana

1. Focus on moisture  products The weather here is very dry and your hair needs all the moisture it can get. Your shampoo should infuse moisture into the hair. Pre shampoo treatment aka pre poo with light oils prevent your shampoo from stripping your hair. The deep conditioning process should also boost moisture in your hair. Kindly put that eye treatment somewhere and pay attention to moisture products. The simple test is to read the ingredients and see where the protein is. Anywhere at the top 5 ingredients is a likely hard protein and further down, you get medium and light protein. The light ones are better since your hair needs list bit of boosting once in a while. Your moisturizer should be moisture based and I've found alternating between creamy and liquid moisturizers is  very helpful.  2. Hair type helps: Simple Google to know your hair to guide you select suitable products for your hair.  3. Read about your hair: After you identify your hair type, read about. Find bloggers

How To Twist Your Own Natural Hair

Whatever I share here is from my personal experience with my natural hair. You may have to tweak it to suite your hair needs. Section the hair into small parts.  Use two mirrors to check the parting at the back and front.  Be sure to use your fingera to check for knots.  Section the two parts to twist.  Apply twist and loc gel or gel or even sheabutter depending on the one that gives you a maximum hold.  Start twisting from the back and work your way up.  Don't borrow hair from another section to twisting. Stick to the tow sections and swirl the ends around your finger tips when you are done.  You may have to practice this for a while so don't worry if your first attempt doesn't produce bomb twists.  Allow the hair to dry before lying on it to avoid smushing the back.

Why Your Natural Hair Is Breaking Off

You are so worried about your hair not growing yet there are some practices that are undermining your efforts. You comb it daily and that causes a lot of breakage. Use your fingers in styling. If the hair is short, use a wide tooth comb.  You don't deep condition often which leads to dry,  brittle natural hair. Try to deep condition at least once a month to provide moisture in your hair.  Your hair needs moisture especially in this part of the world where the weather is mostly dry. Have a hair spritz to use during the day to ensure moisture retention.   The hair products aren't working for you and you are reluctant to change them. These products may cause more damage so if it's not working,  either swap with another person or give it out.   You focus on growth and not retention and therefore don't know why you aren't getting the long hair you want. Pay attention to how you protect your hair and what you use in protecting it. Keep the ends from the shoul

How To Treat Scab Hair

The solution to scab hair doesn't lie in deep conditioning daily; it's about keeping the moisture in the hair 24/7. How can you do this? Aloe vera, hibiscus leave in and rose water glycerin spritz sealed with cantu sheabutter gel oil. I began using aloe vera  early March and in a matter of 7 days, my hair was considerably hydrated.  At night, I massage fresh aloe vera gel on the hair then spray the hibiscus on the hair and apply a bit of Jbco oil mix. In the morning, I spritz with rose water mix, mix a bit of Mielle organics hair milk, Jbco mix and the gel oil and apply it to seal. The way I use these products vary on a daily basis but the key thing is that they are the products  that give me the result I want.  This has been my routine ever since I big chopped and that's what got rid of the dry hair. Braids Shouldn't Hurt!

I follow a certain page on Facebook which posted this picture. I was amazed about the comments ladies made. Almost 95% saw the post as being true and what more, very normal to have braids hurting after installing! About 6 years ago, I'd have thought the same. If you braid your hair and it hurts, please change the stylist. In fact,  take down the braids asap! I've fallen sick due to painful braids and it wasn't good.  Another danger in having tight braids is loss of the hairline. When your hair line recedes, you know how awful your hair styles turn out.  Lastly,  tight braids can weaken your strands. You don't want broken hair and dry hair, right?  Knowledge is power!

Can You Texturize And Still Be Natural?

Here's another question that comes up in the search terms : Can You Texturize And Still Be Natural? Texturizers are the first thing naturals who want to loosen their curls temporarily reach for. The misconceptions about texturizers make it difficult for some naturals to accept their texture. One Sunday morning, a lady sent me an urgent message asking for which and where to get a texturizer to loosen her natural hair a bit, just a bit. Instead of giving her an outright answer, I referred her to this simple analogy. Consider texturizers as the younger siblings of relaxers . Texturizers, texture softeners all PERMANENTLY ALTER your natural hair. The difference is how long you keep it on to get the texture you want. Sometimes, you may feel that your hair still looks natural but when the new growth comes in, you'll be dealing with two or more textures like a fully texlaxed hair. The end result of texture softners and texturizes therefore means you can't be really natural. She

The Coily Queen Regimen

I came across the coily queen regimen when I was surfing for information on how to keep 4c natural hair moisturized for long periods. As part of my non conservative attitude towards my hair, I'm going to do a few hair regimens to help with moisture as I mentioned in my  6 months post big cho p Video. The basic requirements of the coily queen regimen is to shampoo twice a week, deep condition twice a week, apply leave in conditioner daily for 3 weeks, daily scalp oiling and massaging. You can find out more here . This is the regimen for September (we are about 15 people trying it) and at the end, I'll share my verdict. The aim is to increase moisture in the hair, reduce tangles and single strand knots. If you'd like to join this test drive, just follow the instructions or steps as listed by coily queen. The sheamoisture yucca and baobab shampoo will be used, kinky Curly knot leave in, body butter coil crown deep conditioner, grape seed oil, Jane Carter Solution Nourish and S

Wash Day With Sheamoisture Yucca and Baobab Shampoo

Upon reflections and meditations, I've realized that perhaps my knotted ends have to do with my current twists. In addition to that, I often get tired of the gruelling  minutes spent detangling so I stop and use either the shampoo and running water to continue the detangling routine. These led me to rethink my regimen and where it will lead me. I hadn't shampooed in a while so I brought out sheamoisture yucca shampoo (thanks Diana for this gift). First of all, this shampoo smells like perfume - deliciously sweet! However, it doesn't have the same slip as the coconut and hibiscus shampoo. I topped up with the hello hydration conditioner and two hand full of coconut oil (I'm evaluating this oil in my regimen). I find my hair responding well to grapeseed oil. So, I really spent time detangling the ends which was such a daunting task. I'm happy I want to wear my own hair throughout September (more about that soon). Despite all the efforts to smoothen the ends, the

Natural Hair Dos And Dont's

We are aware that we deal with both the rainy and harmattan seasons. However, treating natural hair in these seasons will vary depending on: The products you use Your regimen How you style your hair Even though there are a lot of naturals, most naturals assume that all you need to cater for the hair is water and sheabutter. These products are good for moisturizing but when it comes to other aspects of the hair care journey, most naturals are ignorant or too lazy to care. They complain and nag about not seeing any length as well as facing difficulties in caring for the hair in general. If you are reading this post, kindly note the following dos and don'ts to save you the headaches. The points provided are based on what I know and what I've read: Never, ever, ever comb natural hair in its dry state: For 4b hair like mine, you can't even get the comb through it. Yet, ladies will attempt combing the hair and worse off, with small tooth comb. This causes major breakage

The Bane of Natural Hair In Ghana

It's quite interesting to see naturals abroad being bombarded with products and services from a large array of manufacturers and natural hair service providers. Can that be said of us in this our dear nation? When one goes to any cosmetic shop, it is easier to obtain products for relaxed hair. But if you need  natural hair products, you might  be lucky to get two or three at Makola Market or at well-known shopping malls. This scarcity can create frustrations in caring for the hair.
