10 relaxer application tips

Image
Over the years, I've leanrt some things about relaxers and today, I share 10 relaxer application tips. 1. Don't mix lye and no lye at the same time 2. Always neutralize properly 3. Protect previously relaxed parts using petroleum jelly or sheabutter to prevent the relaxer being washed out from processing the already straight part. Simply put, relaxer over run can cause thin hair and breakage. 4. Know your texture so you choose the appropriate relaxer. 5. Follow instructions 6. Always deep condition after relaxing to restore either protein or moisture back into the hair. You can use either a moisturizing or protein based deep conditioner. 7. Don't mix different brands of relaxers 8.Let your stylist know what you want 9. Store relaxer properly 10. Avoid relaxing in the afternoon: you tend to sweat when the weather is hot. Sweat can cause your scalp to get irritated.

How to moisurize your hair under weave

Hi ladies, hope you are doing well with the last bit of stuff to end the year. Well, since I got the weave, I've had questions about how to moisturize your hair under weave. Obviously, wearing a weave or sew-in requires the same attention as wearing your own hair out. Neglecting your hair under the weave will result in dry, brittle hair and even makes taking the cornrows down a tedious task. The reason  why most people loose hair when wearing weaves is mainly because the hair beneath the weave is not moisturized. In the video, I show how to moisturize and seal in the moisture whilst wearing a weave. Please don't forget to subscribe for more hair videos :) [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qF9KZ6mN5fw&list=UUM6BrVvG2vy0gBWUwDn74rQ]

5 ways to use apple cider vinegar on relaxed hair

I've been using apple cider vinegar in my regimen since I started this hair care journey. I also get questions about how to incorporate apple cider vinegar into a regimen.   Based on my personal experience, there are 5 ways you can use  apple cider vinegar on relaxed hair.  After neutralizing shampoo : When you use apple cider vinegar after using a neutralizing shampoo, you are basically using it to lower the pH of the hair. The pH is a measure used to determine the acidity and alkalinity of a substance. The scale is represented by numbers ranging from 0 to 14 where 7 is neutral. Greater than 7 on the pH scale is more alkaline and less than 7 is more acidic. The pH of hair ranges between 4.5 – 5.5. Lye relaxers range from 12 – 14 and no-lye relaxers range from 9 – 11. (source: Design essentials ) That means you need to use a neutralizing shampoo to bring down the alkaline levels toward a more neutral level. Apple cider vinegar is acidic and therefore, helps to bring up the acidic l

Difference Between Prepoo and Hot Oil Treatment

Image
[1] The difference between Prepoo with oil and hot Oil Treatment? To me, the basic difference is that prepoo with oil is done before shampooing whereas hot oil treatment can be done any time without necessarily having to wash the hair. [2] How do I  protect previously relaxed hair before relaxing? I use either sheabutter or my oil mix. I use roux porosity control conditioner when I have it. You can also use regular vaseline to protect the scalp and the already relaxed hair. [3] What i s your favourite moisturizer? So far, the African pride olive miracle anti breakage moisturizer lotion. [4] Why do you use a sulfate free shampoo? I was curious to know how it will reduce dryness considering the absence of sulphates which dry out the hair.

Product review: ORS Aloe Shampoo

Image
New packaging This review should have been done a long time ago as I've restocked about 3 times; not too late though. I've had this shampoo as part of my stash since 2011 I think and my views about it today haven't changed. Full name:ORS Creamy Olive oil Aloe Shampoo Price: 20-25gh Old Packaging Purchase: Any cosmetic shop My Thoughts: 1. ORS aloe shampoo is a Multi purpose shampoo you get value for your money. This is a neutralizing, chelating and clarifying shampoo. For those suffering from hard water, this is for you. If you use a "box cream", i.e. no lye relaxer, you can use this to get rid of the calcium deposit which tends to make the hair dry and brittle after relaxing. You can use it to get rid of product build up. I use it for all these purposes. 2. Slip: awesome slip which leaves my hair tangle free. 3. Easy to pour out though it has a thick consistency. This thickness makes for easy dilution and that still doesn't affect its effectiveness 4. Nice ci

Beautiful Textures Tangle tamer leave in review

Image
For those who've been following my blog for ages [lol], you know my struggle with finding moisture based products. Fortune smiled on me when I discovered the beautiful textures tangle tamer leave in. I've been using this for some months now and it's time to let you in on how it's been working for me. In the review, I explain it's ingredients, how I use it and how my hair responds to it. Please, don't forget to subscribe to support my channel. ou For those who can't view the video, here's the text. Purchased: 22gh My Thoughts 1) Slip: enough to allow for easy spread. I haven't used it for detangling because once it sinks into the hair, the slip reduces. 2) Consistency: thick and creamy in colour 3) I use it daily too and it still doesn't weigh the hair down. 4) Smells good and does linger for a while. 4)Quantity: a little goes a long way! I really gauge it when pouring in order to control the quantity I use. 5)There are oils in it so I add just a

20 Tips For First Time Pregnant Women

This is something first time pregnant women ask me as a first time mom. Am going to share what I've learned so far. 1)Buy few newborn clothes. I purchased only 4 jasmine dresses and three 0-3 months onesies. (Cat suit/overall). Your baby might be too big for the newborns. Then 3 pieces of 3-6 months size. This is enough to use for the first few days you may not be able to go out. My baby used the newborn overalls for only a few days and we switched to the 3-6 months size. He still wears the jasmine on hot days. 2) Buy as many baby wipes as possible even if you want to use cloth diaper. I've come to love supa santi wipes. I used up a pack within 2 weeks. Read More

Why Your Hair Is Hard After Black Tea Rinse

Image
As an avid reader of hair articles, am always eager to find solutions to stuff that don't turn out well when I want to practice what I read. Tea rinses have come to stay yet the problem lies with how the hair responds to each tea. The most common tea, the black one, seems to give most ladies a hard time by causing the hair to be hard and stiff after application. Well, I think I've found an answer to that! It's not about deep conditioning after use but rather the type of deep conditioner to apply and why.

Hair Tips for Bride-To-Be

Image
--> Back and Front view of my wedding hairstyle Ok, this is the first time am sharing something related to my wedding lol !I've been married for some years now. I've been down the aisle and I had so much fun during the preparations. First of all, apart from being stress free, I was also very relaxed prior to the occasion. Though I didn't know much about hair care at that time, I sailed through the rocky hair choice situation ladies find themselves in during their wedding preparations. Let me share some of the tips I implemented to make my hair style choice stress free. Stick to your go-to stylist or find one ahead of time: This is not the time to experiment with different hair dressers.

How To Use Palm Kernel Oil On Hair

Palm kernel oil is one of the wonderful oils God has blessed us with and can thus be easily found in the markets. This oil is derived from the nut of the palm fruit, different from palm oil which is obtained from the fleshy part of the fruit. One characteristic of the palm kernel on the market is the unpleasant smell. Something that tends to pput people off thereby rendering it a less popular oil in the hair journey of most GH ladies. However, the smell shouldn't prevent you from enjoying the benefits of this precious yet inexpensive oil. Read More

Co-Washing; Does It Really Clean Your Hair?

--> Shampoo is designed to remove oil and dirt ( dirt in the form of particles, dust, lint etc stick to the oil coating on hair). In the process of doing this, shampoo can make hair feel dry. This effect has prompted some naturals to take up conditioner washing or co washing as it is popularly known and even go as far as just washing hair with water only.  Catch all the details here

Need Help In Creating A Relaxed or Natural Hair Regimen?

Image
Ladies who have decided to embark on a healthy hair journey find it quite puzzling  deciphering all the products that are needed to care for relaxed hair and natural hair. Sometimes, it's difficult directing them to  where to find these products too. To have a successful hair journey, you can't be an Island, you need to connect with other ladies to gain more knowledge from their own experiences. You also have the opportunity to see what they use, how they use their products and even get to know about new product lines. The crucial part of being on a healthy hair journey is the regimen and if your regimen doesn't yield the results you want, you can be rest assured that you'll get frustrated. How do you create a regimen?  Building a regimen is dependent on several factors; budget, hair texture, hair needs, climate as well as genetics.  If you have relaxed hair, your regimen will certainly differs from one with natural hair or even loced hair. If you have texlax

Supporting Small Businesses-Our Own Hair Companies

Image
--> A few years ago, I bemoaned the lack of hair care companies which are geared towards our hair care needs according to our climate. Most often, the products we have on the markets do not work well during certain seasons. If we have products made here, it would be conditioned by  climatic factors which will make it more effective to use be either on relaxed or natural hair. As a blogger, I get a lot of mails requesting for places to get products especially organic ones.  I want to help promote small hair companies coming up especially those in Ghana so if you  have products available for my ladies, get in touch for a feature!

January In Review; February Goals

--> All said and done, a lot of the goals couldn't be achieved last month - see goals here - because of the big chop The only goal I've been consistent with is using jbco on my edges and even the whole scalp daily. I've noticed an increase in growth and if you've been following me on www.instagram.com/ghanaianemprezz    or www.facebook.com/ghanaianemprezz  , then, you are no stranger to the changes.  I,however, did an oil rinse   which I found very helpful in keeping the hair moisturized. What do I intend doing this month? Continue applying jbco daily Continue wigging whenever necessary-I'll share some pictures of my custom made lace wig in my next post Do another oil rinse  For now, these three will suffice as I can't really do much with the twa. What are your goals?

How To Wash A Toddler's Hair

Image
I can't count the number of occasions I've literally exclaimed in my head, "just cut off this hair if you can't care for it" upon seeing a toddler with unkempt hair, most often, relaxed too! Am all for long beautiful hair for kids but that doesn't seem to be a reality with most mothers ignorant of how to care for their baby girl's hair. For mothers eager to take matters into their own hands, here's something to help you from  mahoganyknots

Product Review: Creme Of Nature Intensive Conditioning Treatment

Image
Here's is what I think of the much raved about Creme of Nature Intense treatment. I purchased this with the intention of using it weekly. The word 'intensive' means that there is a protein element meant to strengthen the hair and stop breakage.  Unfortunately for me, I didn't notice this until after a couple of weeks.  Do I like it? How did my hair respond to it? Watch and leave your comments, questions or suggestions.

Whipped Sheabutter Using Blender

Image
After several months of laziness, I got around to whipping my almost 33oz bucket size of sheabutter! Most often, what you usually see is the mix being made with a hand mixer or an electric mixer. Well, have no fear! You can use your regular blender. How? Gather all the oils you want to add to your sheabutter. I used hemp oil, extra virgin coconut oil and almond oil.  In no particular order, I poured about 4 tablespoons full of each oil and added the sheabutter into my baby food blender-my big one is too big lol. Be sure to wash your blender well to get rid of pepper or other stuff that might not be pleasant on your skin Blend for some seconds and your whipped sheabutter is ready!
